Album Review

In every sense of the word, Cuff the Duke's major-label debut is an epic of a record. It skips across genres as effortlessly as a rock on water; it deals with major themes; and it sounds like a million bucks. To ponder that this is only the band's second release is awe-inspiring. The album opens in Blue Rodeo territory with the rootsy "The Future Hangs," before veering wildly into "I Really Want to Help You" — which would have you think it's quirky power pop before shifting halfway through to become a proggy instrumental opus. You get the picture. The tone shifts come fast and furious to keep you on your toes: the frantic country jam of "Take My Money and Run"; the haunting epic new wave strings of "No Sleep, No Heat"; the pure strangeness of "The Ballad of Poor John Henry," which should not suggest to the listener that this is a typical ballad. And the lyrics are frightening in the topics they tackle and the intimacy of their experience. In "There Was a Time," lead singer Wayne Petti unexpectedly and suddenly wails over a gorgeously orchestrated wall, "Mom, I'm not gay!/Dad, I'm not gay!/I won't apologize/You wouldn't want me to change." When Petti says "I took the time to compare emotions with energy/And found that the secret was to always have a strategy" ("I'll Meet You on the Other Side"), he is letting you in on the fact that — despite his age — he knows a thing or two about the world and the way it works. Part of the joy of this album is discovering it, so nothing more need be said — other than a recommendation that you give it undivided attention upon first listening. A particular comment regarding the bravado closer, appropriately titled "It's Over," is also warranted: it would be hard to imagine a more fitting end to a roller coaster ride like Cuff the Duke.

Canadian Boys From The Shwa (Oshawa That Is)

One of my all time favorates. Words can not discribe the emotional trip this album will take you on. The second album released from a group of truly local small town kind of group that is not afraid to give back to there home. The only thing better than listening to the records is to whitness the music live. When Cuff The Duke takes the stage a wall of sound that pushes you back on your heels while at the same moment drawing the brain matter through your ears is stagering. The best way to describe my first listening experiance was like the first time I listened to the Siamese Dream album. Buy this, love it, seek out Cuff The Duke, see them live, talk to them, you will not forget your first time. P.S Hardwood Records is Hayden's label and he is still alive and kickin. Look these guys up on the web site for tour dates.!!!

Canadian Gem

Brilliant follow up to "Life Stories For Minimum Wage". Cuff takes elements from different musical genres and uses them to create something different. Had a chance to interview these guys, and they are the real deal. "No sleep, No Heat" shows how Cuff can take song structure and stretch it far beyond convention, yet have it still work. The Harmonica on "The Future Hangs" will ring in your ears for days,Peers' guitar work cuts glass, and really stands out on "Anti-Social". "I Really Want to Help You" showcases Petti's songwriting talents and "A Long Night My Love" displays his vast vocal range. All members bring different elements in, yet they fuse together wonderfully. Amazing album from start to finish. I love the attitude in "Take My Money and Run" Petti means business when he yells "Go on Take it!" Long Live Cuff.

Vinyl Cafe

I heard Cuff the Duke on Stewart McLean's Vinyl Cafe this past weekend (February 3, 2008) and I would just like to say that I have now purchased the last two CD's. I honestly found their music to be such an interesting twist of rock/country. The lyrics are moving and cannot be forgotten. I recommend purchasing some of their songs or the entire album. You won't be disappointed. Just a question to Cuff the Duke: When are you guys coming back to Thunder Bay???? Please come soon...we love you so much here!

Biography

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

It is no wonder that Canada's Cuff the Duke opened for Blue Rodeo on a key tour or that Blue Rodeo's Greg Keelor is producing their fourth album. Like Keelor and his own bandmates, Cuff the Duke are one of those unbelievably talented bands that can jump genres like a game of hopscotch — to the point where their music is almost undefinable except for the good ol' catchall, "alternative."...
