iTunes Review

The Red Hot Organization has been raising money and awareness for AIDS/HIV relief since 1989 with compilations like 1990's Red Hot and Blue and 1993's No Alternative; Dark Was the Night marks its 20th release. Following an alchemic collaboration by Dirty Projectors and David Byrne, the Books and Jose Gonzales unveil a gorgeous version of Nick Drake's "Cello Song" that blends big wooden cello tones with soft, sequenced beats. Feist's angelic voice raises the bar high as she and Ben Gibbard give Vashti Bunyan's "Train Song" some otherworldly harmonies. Kronos Quartet's antiquated-sounding title track utilizes old-timey production in an earnest homage to Blind Willie Johnson. Likewise, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings don't stray too far from Shuggie Otis' original recipe on the soulfully mellow "Inspiration Information." Even Cat Power gets rootsy with Dirty Delta Blues on a southern steeped take of "Amazing Grace." But not all that glitters is old. Conor Oberst and Gillian Welch bequeath a beautiful rendition of Bright Eyes' "Lua" from 2004's I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning.

Great Indy Bands

If you ignore the negative reviews listed, for obvious reasons (Folk has no where to go... ) and just listen to the music you won't be disappointed. This is a great line up of the most popular indy bands out there. I'm not sure the Decemberists have ever written a bad song nor Sufjan Stevens (there is that folk music stuff again) for that matter. The song by the Blonde Redheads is incredibly melodic, I just love listening to Kazu sing. Cat Power's and Andrew Bird songs are superior to most. Arcade Fire has come up with an excellent song and I absolutely love the tune by My Morning Jacket. For me this was a no brainer. 32 indy songs by fabulous bands and helping out a fine cause as well. Go for it, you won't be disapponted.

Great Album for a Great Cause

In response to the first review which questions the non-DRM free album being offered here. Perhaps you should recognize the cause this album's profits are going towards and then maybe people not being able to share it freely, but having to BUY it might make you feel a little better. This is one case where I really don't mind if not being DRM free. The more money this album can generate the better. As for the album itself - it's a whose who of your favourite down tempo indie rock darlings. Some great collaborations, and some amazing songs. Buy it just to do your good deed for the day. CS

Warning - Not iTunes Plus

I thought iTunes was done with 128 kbps files and DRM. But that's what they're selling for this album. I just wish I'd noticed when I clicked "Buy."
