iTunes Review

Much like Bob Dylan’s Blood On the Tracks, John Martyn’s Grace and Danger and  Brendan Gamble’s Heartless Moon, Eels’ End Times is a beautifully wrought album formed by the ruins of the songwriter’s divorce. In this case, Mark Everett split with his wife in 2005 and took five years to release this musical statement. It begins with a whisper. “The Beginning” sounds like Beck performing Sea Change or Mark Kozelek at any time in his career. The bare acoustic guitar stretches the soul over new bones. Recorded mostly at home with a four-track recorder, End Times is as its title implies. Everett sees apocalypse everywhere he looks. The rockabilly fueling “Gone Man” is a last ditch attempt to party as the night shuts down. Everett sings in anguish during “In My Younger Days” as the keyboards and guitars often blur his vocal. “A Line In The Dirt” cries at the piano with a sweet grandeur. “I Need a Mother” is as honest and unnerving as they come. End Times is a gripping, sometimes terrifying experience.

Customer Reviews

Great Album!!! Eels returns to his softer acoustic side.

This album doesn't carry his usual tones of anger or depression. This albums give more of a feeling of resignation and acceptance.

Brings back memories of 'Daisies of the Galaxy' and 'Beautiful Freak'. Not as dark as 'Electro-Shock Blues'. E has a phenomenal talent in writing melancholy songs that provide a wonderful backdrop to everyday life (it's probably why he is used often for soundtracks to movies - Shrek, Levity, etc...).

Outstanding songs are "Little Bird", "Mansion of los Feliz", "Nowadays", "Gone Man", "In my younger days".

WOW

Absolutely a must have for all the sensitive people left in this world / un album magnifique. écriture brillante. on se fait vraiment raconter des histoires ici, et on écoute. C'est génial d'un bout à l'autre. Vraiment. GROS coup de coeur

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Although Eels are often marketed as a full-fledged band, singer/songwriter E (real name: Mark Oliver Everett) is responsible for the group's sound and direction. Born in Virginia on April 9, 1963, Everett became interested in rock music at an early age via his sister's record collection, and began playing drums at the age of six (as well as tinkering on his family's piano). As the years progressed, Everett began leading a troubled teenage life, which was further complicated by his father's death....
