Euromix? You mean KISS 92 on a CD???

I had been collecting the Euromix CDs for years, from the beginning with what we now call "classic euro" on Euromix 2 in 1995 up to Euromix 2008 (a.k.a. Euromix 14). Unfortunately, Euromix 2007 actually contained more house than euro. To be quite frank, Euromix 2007 was the beginning of the end for this previously great CD series. 2008 continued the trend of the decline of euro, save for a few outdated tracks by Cascada, Basshunter and Groove Coverage. I continued to support the series just because of the few songs that represented what the Euromix brand used to be. Euromix 2009 took a drastic turn for the worse. Since when has Lady Gaga, Katy Perry or the Pussycat Dolls been considered EURO?? There was absolutely nothing euro on that CD, aside from Basshunter - I Miss You and an extremely amateur sounding production by Craig Powell named "She Said".

Euromix 2010 is no better than 2009, save for the ONE amazing euro song by Milk Inc., named Blackout. Black Eyed Peas, Flo Rida, GaGa, Katy Perry and Wow belong nowhere near a Euromix compilation, and yet here they are, ruining my favourite CD series that I grew up with. Other tracks that I'd consider acceptable as "secondary" tracks on a Euromix CD include Snap! (though the remix is terrible), Inna, Akcent, and Prezioso & Marvin's crappy Gigi D'Agostino remake.

If you purchase this album, don't call yourself a EURO lover. This MESS is not what the series is (was?) about. Check out Euromix 2-12 if you want to hear what has truly kept EUROmix around for 16 years.

Hopefully there'll be a new "Euromix Greatest Hits" compilation that actually stays true to its namesake, though I won't hold my hopes up. I don't know whether SPG, Tony Monaco, Z103.5, or all three are to blame for this disgusting compilation, but they can best believe I won't be touching it. I am disappointed in SPG for putting out such a piece of crap, and I am also disappointed in Tony Monaco for putting his name on such an embarassment. He claims to be all about the "EURO, EURO, EURO!", but at the end of the day, his paycheck is all that he cares about. Most of all, I am disappointed in Z103.5. I have been a listener since their humble days as a small radio station named HOT 103.5 pumping out dance music all day long. I listened through their transition phase to a Dance/Top 40 station as HITS 103.5, and I have continued to listen through their continuous change to an all "HITS" radio station in competition with Kiss 92. I feel alienated and forgotten as a loyal listener, being replaced by Bieber obsessed teenie boppers (I'm surprised they didn't fit him on this CD as #21 after Wow). If I wanted to listen to crap all day long, I would listen to Kiss 92. I now listen to Virgin 99.9 more than any other station because at least they aren't pretending to be something that they aren't.

Please put Euromix out of its misery and make 2010 the last in the series, unless it's revamped to live up to its old reputation as the best collection of the past year's eurodance hits. I, for one, am glad that the FREESTYLE HEAVEN series was killed off before it could become disgustingly terrible like Euromix has; at least it ended on a (somewhat) high note with Freestyle Heaven 5/Freestyle Heaven Classics. I often go to CD shops around Toronto and shop online for older euro/freestyle compilations and artist albums missing from my collection (recent purchases include SPG's Freestyle's Greatest Hits Volume 1 from 1993 and the Stevie B - This Time/Lil Suzy - Greatest Hits double CD pack) out of nostalgia and the need to support the artists on these CDs, even though many of them are no longer active in the music industry.

Despite this disappointing CD, I DO have to give credit to SPG for continuing to (slowly) release the occasional euro song on iTunes, including those by Liz Meyer, R.I.O., Groove Coverage and Milk Inc. This continued support for new euro songs (though not compilations) from SPG is amazing for music listeners in Canada. The biggest issue in getting these great artists into the spotlight is the lack of support from clubs and RADIO stations like Z103.5 who prevent such great tracks from making it onto any compilations.

One more thing...I heard the live to air "CD release" broadcast from Frequency Nightclub on Z103.5 on a "Wayback Wednesday" that specializes in playing classic EURO, freestyle and more. The ONLY song that was played from Euromix 2010 was the Snap! - Rhythm is a Dancer remix. Am I the only one who finds it strange that songs from a EUROmix CD can't find a place during an event dedicated to EURO??

Biography

Genre: Jazz

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Tony Monaco is a leader in a modest revival of the Hammond B3 organ in jazz. As he has been with so many fledgling jazz organists, Jimmy Smith played a significant role in attracting Monaco to jazz and retaining his interest in the music. Monaco was 12 years old when he first heard Smith and, as a 16th birthday present, got a phone call from the organ giant. The culmination of this association came when Smith invited the young performer to join him at Smith's club. Monaco has also been fortunate...
