iTunes Review
With their third album, Montreal’s Wolf Parade really expand their sound to create deeper atmospheres where the keyboards take on a dark passion and the reverb adds a cavernous growl to tunes that desire great mystery. “Palm Road” is the sound of a cement mixer jamming up its gears, while “What Did My Lover Say (It Always Had To Go This Way)” turns up the keyboards on David Bowie’s ‘80s period. “Little Golden Age” turns in a perfectly alienated new-wave groove. “In the Direction of the Moon” takes synths into the anthemic territory once occupied by the Waterboys. “Ghost Pressure” twists to a sweeter light. “Pobody’s Nerfect” uses isolating textures to create greater distress. “Two Men In New Tuxedos” loosens up an early Talking Heads rhythm. “Oh You, Old Thing” could be another shout-out to David Bowie. What holds everything together is the brilliantly cohesive playing and the songs that are as catchy as new wave will allow.
Customer Reviews
The Wolf Parade album you
This is a wonderful album, perhaps their best. Swelling, articulate guitars define this series of pounding ballad/rock songs. There are real moments of epic musical atmospheres.
Not quite as disjointed and frantic as their first album, and not nearly as bizarro as their second - EXPO 86 is a mix of it all, a synthesis of their greatest moments.
If you even remotely liked these guys before, you'll love this album! But probably not for the same reasons.
It's fresh, catchy, and althought it's made for headphones, you'll be just as happy blasting it over speakers in your backyard, while flipping burgers!
the best wolf parade album yet!
this album generally rocks a little harder than the previous two, especially the last half. the songs on which spencer krug sings are a lot more uptempo than his tracks on "apologies to the queen mary" and "mount zoomer", and are built around some great hooks. boeckner's guitar is a lot more active in this album, including a great little solo in "pobody's nerfect". the rhythm section takes things up a notch from the last album. the lyrics are both intriguing and pleasing to the ear. on the whole, this is their best offering yet.
Wolf Parade
Another great album from the Wolf pack!
