iTunes Review
Ireland’s Snow Patrol pull off something unusual here. Their second major label release, much like 2004’s Final Straw, goes lush without going limp, arena-bound without sacrificing intimacy. Sonic echoes of Radiohead, U2 and the Jam abound, but singer Gary Lightbody grounds things in subtle touches and soul, commanding these atmospheric pop songs with an engaging sense of foreboding. The opening cut, “You’re All I Have,” roars out of the speakers, but Lightbody never abandons the melody, delicately dropping the notes in sublime resignation. Elsewhere, the band builds ethereal mystique (“You Could Be Happy”) and kaleidoscopic textures (“It’s Beginning to Get to Me”) for maximum effect. Four tracks employ strings; four tracks employ a choir. “Set the Fire to the Third Bar” adds Martha Wainwright to the vocal mix for a duet of candles and piano. With the exception of the likeably overblown “Make This Go On Forever,” nothing is too grandiose. Snow Patrol achieve that rare balance of intimacy and power.

Another Simply Brilliant Effort
Since I first heard Final Straw, I have been a huge Snow Patrol fan. I was a little sceptic about this album after I heard Hands Open for the first time a while back and was left with something to be desired. But since then I went to Europe for a week and heard You're All I Have on MTV, I knew I had to buy this album no matter what. I am very impressed with their continued efforts and the lovely transition between Final Straw two years ago and this. This is something ever fan of music, particularly indie, should buy. You're All I Have: Brilliant opener to a brilliant album. 5* Hands Open: It took some time for it to grow on me. 5* Chasing Cars: Wow. The best track I've heard so far in 2006. I can't say enough about the brilliance of this track. If you don't buy the album, at least, buy it. 5* Shut Your Eyes: Cool track, cool track. 5* It's Beginning To Get To Me: Another magnificent song. 5* You Could Be Happy: I love the opening to this song. 5* Make This Go On Forever: The keyboard makes this track beautiful. 5* Set The Fire To The Third Bar: I haven't really warmed up to this track at all. 3* Headlights On Dark Roads: I like the metaphorical lyrics, but it's nothing fantastic. 4* Open Your Eyes: Lovely. 5* The Finish Line: Alright, but borders on mundane. 3* Warmer Climate: A nice conclusion. 4* Chasing Cars makes this album. It is probably the best thing that I've ever heard from Snow Patrol. Run is the only thing that almost matches it's brilliance and even it falls way short of this track. The emotional drive behind everything in this track is enough to take me to the extreme highs of happiness and make me break down and cry all at once. I can't describe it using enough words. There is such an overwhelming force driving this song, you have to listen to it to really take it all in. Aside from KT Tunstall's Eye To The Telescope, this is probably the best album of 2006. Buy It. Ignore the reviews and buy it NOW!!!! Everything about this album makes it worth taking a look at. Snow Patrol have created some of the best music in the past 10 years and this is a truely a spectacular showing of their talent. Keep it up guys.
Upon further reflection
I have to agree, the first time I listened to this album I wasn't completely sold on the awesomeness of it. Having listened to it a few times through over a couple of days it is quickly growing on me and it is easily one of the best albums I've purchased in a while on iTunes. Can't wait to see them in concert in Vancouver, hopefully their live show is better than it was before!
great offering
Being a pretty big SP fan, I thought that Final Straw would be a hard recording to follow up. I approached my first listen of "Eyes open" dubiously but quickly found myself won over. All of the material is very well produced. Lightfbody's vocal phrasing is quite remarkable. Fave track for now is Shut Your Eyes.
