Album Review
In case you're wondering, despite what VH-1's Behind the Music might have you believe, hair metal is still alive and kicking. Unfortunately, it's more low-brow than ever, thanks to L.A.'s Steel Panther. Taking debauchery to the next level for their debut, Feel the Steel, the band gathers inspiration from Warrant, Poison, and Mötley Crüe as they pretend to be a metal group with two primal desires: rocking faces and scoring chicks. Metal satire is a well-traveled road, with Bad News, Spinal Tap, and Tenacious D all taking their respective turns portraying lunk-headed metalheads. Likewise, one-time L.A. Guns frontman Ralph Saenz (playing the part of "Michael Starr") does his best impression of an egotistical David Lee Roth/Bret Michaels type who dedicates 50-percent of his time on the microphone objectifying women ("Fat Girl Thar She Blows) and the other half boasting about his appendage. It's a convincing act, as is the performance by the rest of the band (drummer Stix Zadinia, bassist Lexxi Foxxx, and lead guitarist Satchel), with their text-book Hit Parader shredding and spot-on attention to '80s production details. Metal references fly out of every corner, with nods to the Def Leppard ultra-processed "Whoa Oh" sound, Richie Sambora's "Bad Medicine" guitar talk box intro, and a slapping acoustic ode to Extreme's definitive power ballad "More Than Words." Steel Panther's ability to create songs that sound like they came from 1987 is commendable, and as ridiculously clichéd and crude as the lyrics are, there are some chuckle-worthy moments. That said, it's not a disc for the easily offended or the faint of heart.

Glam Rock Still Lives on! Guitar Solo in 3, 2, 1 . . .
Steel Panther is fronted by singer Michael Starr, who is better known as one-time L.A. Guns and Atomic Punks vocalist Ralph Saenz. He's got one of the best vocals in rock. With those pipes of his, this CD has opened a door to a new type of music. I cannot believe we never thought of tapping into the glam rock fans and comedy fans together. The best songs on this CD are . . . all of them. It's amazing that they are playing around with this comedy glam rock thing but the songs are written perfectly with amazing unique music. Song like "Community Property", "Fat Girl" and "Stripper Girl" make you want to laugh at the lyrics but are also amazed at the vocal and musical talent of the band. I know one thing. The next time they are touring through my neck of the woods, I'll be one of the groupies trying to get on that tour bus.
Steel Panther sets a new standard
Steel Panther live is an evening to remember and I was eager to have a listen when their album was released. I was nervous the CD would not capture the energy and humour of their live show. I was wrong. Feel the Steel is fantastic. Steel Panther is a phenominal satyr of 80s hair metal, much like Spinal Tap was to classic rock. But what sets Steel Panther apart is the fact the tunes are solid. Satchel is an impressive talent on lead guitar and Michael Starr can belt it out with the best of them. Of course, the Steel Panther lyrics will have you questioning how did they record this album without splitting a gut laughing? Feel the Steel is priceless. Community Property is gold, and The Shocker and Party All Day are classics.
awesome.
This cd it just amazingg.. I could listen to this album from the first song to the last song every day for the rest of my life and i guarantee it would never get old. If you are a fan of the good old heavy metal and are debating weather or not to get this album just go ahead and do it. I promise you wont regret it. Steel Panther Rules!
