iTunes Review

The albums from the woman who became a superstar with “You Oughta Know” have become intense confessionals where it’s more like a matter of you have to know. Morissette’s psyche twists and turns like her murderous grammar, making for uncomfortably personal yet riveting listening. “Straitjacket” works as a dressing down of an inattentive lover (“Talking with you’s like talking to a sieve that can’t hear me”) except Morissette’s the one who ends up losing her grip. Producer and co-writer Guy Sigsworth, noted for his work with Bjork, window dresses these tunes with extra beats, strings (“Torch”), tabla (“Citizens of the World”), and vocal manipulations, transforming Morissette’s delivery into a transmission from outer space. This otherworldly charm sweetens “Giggling Again for No Reason,” one of the album’s pure expressions of momentary joy. Elsewhere, it’s a frightening amount of stress for one woman, from “Moratorium,” where she declares, “I declare a moratorium on things relationship,” to “Tapes,” which recounts the unsteady voices in her head. The album plays as much as a therapy session as a piece of music. Intriguing to say the least.

WHOA

So... this is the most diverse album Ive ever heard... it runs with NIN styles on 'The Guy Who Leaves' to Evanescene with "Versions of Violence" to summertime pop love LFO wannabe song "On The Tequila". If you want an album where each song is nothing like the rest, then pick this up.

Have a taste....

Love the new album! So many different moods, and it all fits together. Alanis flirts with electronica on tracks like "Straitjacket" and "Giggling Again..." and updates her sound yet again. "Versions of Violence" rocks harder than anything we've heard since "You Oughta Know." "Not As We" is brilliant classic Alanis (stripped and laid bare)! I've always loved her cds, and don't really get why people want her to keep making "Jagged Little Pills," but if anyone has been waiting around for her to make an album where they could "rediscover" her, I recommend "Flavours."

She Does It Again

Blasting open the album with 'Citizen of the Planet', the intensity of 'Straightjacket', with a truly brilliant 'Versions of Violence', the soft melodies of 'Not As We' and 'Madness', and the more pop-rocker voice in 'The Guy Who Leaves', and not to forget the almost-imogen-heap-like 'Giggling Again for No Reason', the already appraised "Underneath", as well as the melodic 'Torch'. All of the songs on Alanis's latest album are incredible. Mustbuy!

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Alanis Morissette was one of the most unlikely stars of the mid-'90s. A former child actress turned dance-pop diva, Morissette later transformed herself into a confessional alternative singer/songwriter in the vein of Liz Phair and Tori Amos. However, she bolstered that formula with enough pop sensibility, slight...
