The early turning point

After the first Rush drummer left the band, Neil Peart joined Rush and recorded "Fly by Night". Right from the get-go you can hear a marked difference between this album and their first album. The playing by all musicians on this album seems more complex and intricate. I'm not saying it's better then the first record but different and this difference will marks a significant turning point for Rush. I really find this album interesting to listen to. As a drummer, Neil Peart's playing in particular, on this disk, are a revelation and inspiration to me. Very cool stuff .

Neil Peart arrives and the rest is history!!

The first album with Peart, Lifeson and Lee together and what a classic!! Although most are familar with the title track the entire album is great. It's too bad alot of these songs don't get the airplay they used to. Most of these track are just straight up classic rock and not as progressive as 2112 and Hemispheres but stellar just the same.

Enter Neil Peart

My favorite Rush album, and one that is perhaps overlooked in favour of their later monster recordings like 2112 or Farewell to Kings. There's something about the sound of this album, maybe it comes from staring at that sweet album cover too much, but it's like being attacked by a giant snowy owl in the blue arctic night. But seriously, I could listen to this album forever, with Alex Lifeson's heavy guitar riffing, experimental growling wahhhhrrrr and hooky bluesy wailing, combined with the unrestrained madness of Neil Peart's "are you sure that's only one guy" drumming and Geddy Lee's big round brassy bass.

The only song here that doesn't stand the test of time is the fantasy-prog-on-valium "Rivendell" which is for die-hard Lord of the Rings fans only. Of course the title track has become a Rush staple, but for me the stand out track is the most experimental track, "By-Tor and the Snow Dog", which is a sonic delight, even if you can't get past the fantasy lyrics. "By-Tor" also contains what is probably my favorite Alex Lifeson guitar solo.
