Fantastic song writing

Let me begin by stating my biases. I have watched Cécile grow as both a guitarist and a song writer over the past twelve years. The first time I heard her play guitar something clicked, and I've been a fan of her playing and musicality in general ever since. I mention musicality for a few reasons. Firstly, because although Cécile's guitar playing is extraordinary, it is her musicality which defines who she is as a musician and songwriter. Secondly, the fact that this album is not a "guitarist's album" as much as it is simply an album says a lot about Cécile's motivation. The music comes first. Another bias that is perhaps worth mentioning is my familiarity with Cécile's style and, to a large degree, influences. This music speaks to me partly because I "get where she is coming from". However, I can honestly say that I am not writing this review simply to hype a colleague's album. If I didn't think this album was worth five stars then I would have simply stayed silent. Each of these songs has been carefully crafted, from the non-stock chord changes to the lyrics to the vocal arrangements. Everything fits into place as it should, with meticulous attention to detail. At the same time, this recording doesn't give the impression of being overly slick. While it may not always sound like it stylistically, "Freedom Calling" is a soul record. There's nothing contrived here - it's all straight from the heart and you can feel it when listening to each song - from the serious ("Lettre A Personne") to the light-hearted ("Dachshund Blues"). Emotionally engaging and catchy pop of the best kind.

Cool in the Heat

We just saw Cécile performing live in Ottawa at the Byward Market with her bassist on Catherine Pogonat's great CBC show "Espace Publique Éclectique". Cecile performed a country-twinged bluesy-bopping version of "Ma's Kitchen", the bassist offering up the lovely harmonies. Both were clearly having a wonderful time jammin', like everyone in the crowd, as well as radio-host Catherine head-weaving behind the mic. We downloaded the album on our iPad right away and are enjoying the musical ride through multiple genres of Cécile's soulful songwriting and playing. Happy to support such a talented artist. It's almost certainly unfair of me, but I took off a star because as great as the album is so far, it doesn't capture the soul of her live performance. Ah, to heck with it... 5 stars!
