iTunes Review

Ben Harper turns up the rock ‘n’ roll for 2011’s Give Till It’s Gone. Harper’s always offered a varied approach where he stars as the laid-back leader that can roll with the punches, but here he sounds like he’s lit a fire under his band, Relentless7. There’s an honest, quick energy to “Don’t Give Up On Me Now,” “Clearly Severely” and “Rock N’ Roll Is Free,” where the band doesn’t overthink the situation. “Feel Love” is a sweet ballad that allows Harper to reach the top of his range. Ringo Starr guests on two tracks, the Beatles-influenced psychedelia of “Spilling Faith” and the instrumental, “Get There from Here” that sounds like it was recorded during the Magical Mystery Tour sessions. Harper’s more expected compatriot Jackson Browne joins him for the touching ballad, “Pray That Our Love Sees the Dawn.” “Waiting On a Sign” has the laidback rock groove that most people associate with Harper. “Do It for You, Do It for Us” sounds like a classic-rock staple from the ‘70s.

Ben Rocks out Again

This album continues Harper's foray into the classic rock genre that started with "White Lies for Dark Time" (his last release). While he has always shown a tendency to rock out the last two albums have really highlighted this side of his song-writng/performance talent. It appears that his lighter folk side is being satisfied with the Fistful of Mercy project. Style aside the album is strong with some tracks that I thing will be great live, Waiting on a Sign and Spilling Faith I think will be particularly fun to see him perform. For those who like to hear his great voice there are a couple of lighter tracks as well, the opening number Don't Give Up on Me Know being the best of these. All these lighter songs have him signing at a very high pitch something he did for his contribution to the movie soundtrack for "Wretches and Jabberers" earlier this year. Unlike some of his other albums of the past this one in particular takes a couple of listens before you really get into it, certainly that was my experience.
My first two times through it I really was starting to think that this was his first bad album, but it started to grow on me and now I find myself listening to it frequently and looking forward to his summer tour.

Great album!!

Summer
