iTunes Review

In 2009, Sigur Rós singer/guitarist Jon Thor Birgisson (Jónsi) and Alex Somers released Riceboy Sleeps, a majestic and lovely creation sprung from the musical landscape tilled and tended by Sigur Rós. On Go Jónsi stretches out in surprising fashion: clearly, a pop heart beats beneath his sheen of Icelandic cool. Go is uplifting, at times joyous, yet Jónsi’s sweet, fairie-dusted voice stays firmly on this side of twee. French horns, cellos, harps and other orchestral dressings sparkle and glisten; flutes and spare, martial drumbeats render “Go Do” fluttery and airborne, and the hop-scotching woodwinds, strings and acoustic guitars on “Boy Lilikoi” and “Animal Arithmetic” are sheer heaven on the aural palate. Occasional somber tracks like “Tornado” and “Hengilas” unfold like miniature Sigur Rós epics, crescendos and codas coming a little sooner, Jonsi’s surging falsetto as goosebump-raising as any Sigur Rós tune. ("Go Quiet," a film featuring acoustic versions of these tracks, was directed by Dean DeBlois who also co-directed the animated film How To Train Your Dragon,” the soundtrack of which contains the Jónsi track “Sticks and Stones.”)

Breathtaking. Otherworldly.

If you're well in love with Sigur Rós, you'll get this without hesitation. I already previewed it on NPR and have had countless listens. I am always saying that it's amazing how our favourite artists reach new heights, giving us something even more incredible. You know they will always be great, but then they go a whole other level of moving and reaching you. It's so inspiring. "Go" is bright, beautiful, uplifting, emotionally profound, and musically pristine. Again, it's hard to fathom that Jónsi could get MORE ethereal or angelic, but you will think the same thing when you listen. Mind blowing. He truly does come from another world. "Tornado", "Grow Till Tall", "Kolnidur", and "Hengilas" are SO unbelievable...every second of them leaves me speechless. This may sound funny, but if I could live in a song(s), currently it would be "Grow Till Tall" and "Tornado"...they move me so much that words become completely useless if I try to explain more. "Go Do" of course, is a joyous favourite. "Animal Arithmetic" (love the lyrics), "Boy Lilikoi" (so joyous too), "Sinking Friendships" (all I can think is sunny days and rippling water), and "Around Us" (profound) are all uptempo/upbeat and fabulous. Most songs have English lyrics. Sound-wise, of course there are inklings of Sigur Rós but this really is Jónsi apart from SR. Can't wait to see him May 1st in Toronto. He's doing two dates here, so don't miss out!

P.S. - Don't forget to check out the "NPR: All Songs Considered" podcast, where Jónsi was guest DJ at the end of this past March.

100% Pure Joy.

Not since the Candlepark Stars came along have I heard an album that is so infused with nothing but happiness. This CD is 100% pure and complete joy: totally uplifting. It's music without any dark side, if that makes sense... no "downer" songs, just songs that make you feel GOOD. I didn't know if I'd like Jonsi as a solo act because I love Sigur Ros, but I gotta say... I like Jonsi better this way. A++ on this CD.

This is what joy sounds like

Biography

Born: April 23, 1975 in Iceland

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

After spending 16 years as the singer/guitarist in the Icelandic group Sigur Rós, Jon Thor Birgisson renamed himself Jónsi and began a solo career. Though he had used the name before on a project with Alex Somers (as Jónsi & Alex on 2009’s album Riceboy Sleeps), the pixie-voiced singer’s first solo album under the Jónsi name was Go, which was released on longtime label XL in the spring of 2010. Featuring more upbeat and poppy songs than those he had written and sung with Sigur Rós, Jónsi was...
