iTunes Review

Phil Collins hired three of the surviving Funk Brothers to recreate the sound of old Motown in a studio in Switzerland. Collins has always loved Motown — he had a hit in 1981 with the Supremes’ “You Can’t Hurry Love” — and the 18 tracks on the basic album and 26 on the iTunes Deluxe Version are all done in complete homage to the sound that bedazzled Collins’ youth. The Deluxe Version includes many of Collins’ best efforts. “You Really Got a Hold On Me”, “Dancing In the Streets”, “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” and “Standing In the Shadows of Love” are all indestructible, timeless tunes. Collins doesn’t just mine Motown’s biggest hits, but works through “Girl (Why You Wanna Make Me Blue),” “In My Lonely Room” and “Never Dreamed You’d Leave In Summer” with the same passion. He’ll never be Levi Stubbs or Smokey Robinson, but he also doesn’t sound much like the guy whose hits include “Against All Odds”, “Misunderstanding” and “That’s All”. Fans will surely be intrigued.

excellent.

well, lets start by replying to that other reviews. as for F for originality, this album wasn't supposed to be original. It was supposed to and is an album of Phil revisiting the songs he enjoyed in his youth. I know that a lot of people want "new" songs by these guys, but this album is great nonetheless. Phil has pored his heart into this album and you can hear it. Having the Funk Brothers on this album compliment PC excellent arrangements. This album fulfils Phil's 8 album commitment to Atlantic Records. Not sure how he'll release after, most likely digitally. Most of the world is unfortunately going that way. I was unfortunately because I work in a CD shop. Sales are great though. In Canada retailers last unlike in America where the economy is so bad that even Virgin Megastore couldn't afford to stay open.

This album is excellent and a must for any TRUE Phil Collins fan. Yes, some dinosaurs will complain that its not Genesis, but its not supposed to be. This is Phil being Phil. Take it or leave it. I think he's done a AMAZING job on this album and hope to hear more stuff when he feels ready to release new stuff.

True fans respect Phil choice in the mean time. But should this be his "last" album release, WELL DONE. Its great and been a pleasure to listen to.

really bad

Really Crap, he doesn't have the voice for these song's

um.....what the?

Really? Seriously?......Always been a big Phil/Genesis fan....but I have to say that this is not what I want to hear from an artist of his caliber. Sorry Phil ;-(

Phil Collins' ascent to the status of one of the most successful pop and adult contemporary singers of the '80s and beyond was probably as much of a surprise to him as it was to many others. Balding and diminutive, Collins was almost 30 years old when his first solo single, "In the Air Tonight," became a number two hit in his native U.K. (the...
