A good album, but not my favourite from Barlow.

Emilie Claire Barlow is a talent. There is no question about that. I own every album she's put out, see her shows when I can, and like to think of myself as one of her biggest fans. But with that being said, I don't think this is her best work. There are some really fantastic tracks on here -- the titular "Haven't We Met" is an infectiously upbeat waltz, "La Vem a Baiana" is her classic peppy, toe-tapping tune, and "Jardin d'hiver" is simply beautiful, both instrumentally and vocally. But overall, I found that many of the songs lacked a little something. For one, there seem to be more slow songs, which in itself isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I found the delivery of these (and even some of the more upbeat numbers) to be a little lukewarm. Unlike ballads on past records (e.g., "The Very Thought of You", "A Time for Love", "Mood Indigo", etc.), I felt like the lyrics were just being recited here without much emotion. Even the vocaleses aren't as fun. Not one to go crazy with vocal gymnastics, Barlow instead demonstrates her talent through her pitch-perfect clear tone and ability to handle hairpin turns. Her skill can be seen on "You're Driving Me Crazy", which, despite showing Barlow's technical prowess, leaves me wanting more. It's likely that this rendition is in a lower register and is less melodic than I like to hear. But, it is growing on me, as is the very cool "Comin' Home Baby", which I found to be too sparse initially. The instrumental work (all arranged by Barlow herself) is magnificent as always, and on some tunes they really shine and save the day for me, lending some extra excitement to what might otherwise just be an okay song (e.g., piano & guitar solos on "You Make Me Feel So Young", lush strings on "You Must Believe in Spring", everyone on "Will You Still Be Mine"). So while I don't think this is her best or most exciting album, "Haven't We Met" is a solid release that is worth the purchase. I've read reviews stating that Barlow lacks passion, and while that might be the case here, you only have to listen to her version of "Airmail Special" or "Stompin' at the Savoy" to know that she has plenty of oomph in her. This is perhaps a more restrained offering, but is certainly by no means a bad album. A good choice for a low-key kind of day. (As a side note, if you are debating between buying the album here on iTunes versus the actual CD, get the iTunes version. I had a lot of problems with the CDs… tried 2 CDs from different stores and still could not get the songs to download onto either my Mac or PC. They work okay in a CD player, but even then, not perfectly. Very frustrating. The iTunes version has no problems.)

Biography

Born: June 06, 1976 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Genre: Jazz

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Because Emilie-Claire Barlow is a female jazz singer from Canada, some American jazz enthusiasts have inevitably compared her to Canada's most famous jazz export: Diana Krall. But truth be told, Barlow doesn't sound anything like Krall. While Krall's performances have a sultry, dusky, very nocturnal quality, Barlow's singing has favored a youthful, girlish sweetness. That isn't to say that Barlow's bop-oriented work is unswinging — in fact, she has no problem tackling complex arrangements,...
