This band pretending to be a high school band has created a mini-masterpiece here. They are also really, really good live, so go see a show.
High Five
I bought this EP at one of WATC's shows not too long ago and boy was that $10 well spent! In my opinion, the band's newest addition (Welcome Blake!) has prompted a change in the band's overall sound. Be that as it may, the new sound is amazing. This EP is not a continuation of their last album, but a fantastic progression and these songs showcase that progress well. Although six tracks might not sound like much, they all pack a punch(!) and you can tell that exceptional effort was put into crafting each and every one.
The EP introduces you to the new We Are The City with Get Happy, a song that is reminiscent of In A Quiet World, but with a fresher and slightly moodier feel. Other new elements that shake things up include some sort of voice altering device on Dark/Warm Air and strings on 1987, which are a really nice touch. That's It, That's All is probably my favourite song on the album - it reminds me of being at one of their live shows: the tight stop/starts (? - I don't know technical terms) and wanting to shake my head, stomp my feet and yell along with Cayne at the top of my lungs. This EP is completed with the captivating lyrics of An Angel In White. I won't spoil it and post any lyrics, but if you were captivated by April (of In A Quiet World), be prepared to be mesmerized, again.
Although I really loved WATC's first album, it's quite possible that I love this EP even more: I say high fives for High School!
