iTunes Review
The seeds of the Dead Weather were first sprinkled during the Kills' opening slot for the Raconteurs. Jack White was given doctor's orders to take it easy on the vocals, then inviting Alison Mosshart to help out. All went so well, they took things into the studio along with Raconteurs' Jack Lawrence and Queens of the Stone Age's Dean Fertita. The result? Horehound — a deep and dark sojourn into electrified rock with stuttering funk backbeats (courtesy of Mr. White who anchors the group as drummer, but pops up with the occasional line and vocal tic all throughout). Electric organ and fuzz-ed up bass ride up alongside Mossheart's grimy, rock-addled vocals on "Treat Me Like Your Mother" and "Hang You from the Heavens," while other tracks show a sense of experimentation akin to the rhythm-based freakouts of early Jamaican dub. Easily the most forward-thinking project Mr. Jack White has been involved in, and a triumph.
Customer Reviews
Wow
This album is so much darker than any of the bands it's members came from. Yeah, even Queens of the Stone Age. It's got real attitude and the shady colour scheme of the album really supports the rough sound. It gets pretty experimental at some points, like on "3 Birds", and then other songs like "Hang You from the Heavens" are just for rocking out to. You'll be surprised at Jack White's tormented howling near the end of "Rocking Horse", and Alison Mosshart's scratchy vocals on "Treat Me Like Your Mother" are pretty amazing. "New Pony" is a great Bob Dylan cover that's really explosive, and it all closes with the bluesy "Will There Be Enough Water?". Great album.
Turn It Up!
Jack White needs to be recognized as one of the best song writers , musicians and producers in the modern rock era. The Dead Weather has the feel of something real when so much of todays music is pre–fab and pro tooled to death. Love the way 60 Feet Tall, New Pony and Bone House rock in a big way. Thanks to the band for some real music.
Like an oily old gear in a car and parts of Mexico
This album is unpredictable, angry, sexy, scary and awesome! It takes a couple of listen to kind of like Interpol's first album, and then you can't get enough.
