iTunes Review

This Rarities Edition of Joe Cocker’s Mad Dogs & Englishmen contains the bonus tracks originally available as part of the 2006 Deluxe Edition of this album. For folks who never got around to updating, this allows the listener to forego purchasing the different updates and still grab ahold of the bonus material. There are eight additional live tracks from the performances that comprised the original album. Four feature Cocker on vocals, including two Beatles tunes (“Something,” “With a Little Help from My Friends,” of course) and the Band’s “The Weight.” Musical director Leon Russell pulls out “Dixie Lullaby” and “Hummingbird.” Two single versions of  “The Letter” and “Space Captain,” used to promote the album, are thrown next to two studio cuts, a loose and funky instrumental, “Warm-Up Jam” with Leon Russell and the Shelter People, and Russell singing “The Ballad of Mad Dogs and Englishmen.” It’s as appealing to Leon Russell fans as Joe Cocker fans.

Amazing! Glory to God

It seems that Chris is just getting better album by album. I thought his last album (See The Morning) was brilliant, but now this! And even though I am familiar the live Passion versions of some of his songs (Our God, Awakening, Where The Spirit of the Lord Is) these studio and acoustic versions breathe whole new life into the songs. I thank God for creating such great talent like Chris Tomlin, who inspires me to worship Jesus daily!

Can't Chris Tomlin afford a real string section?

My cynical title aside, it's a pretty good album. The first track is a poor studio version of the live anthem "Our God". I can't get passed the casio-keyboard strings. Who listened to it and thought it was a good idea? Can't Chris afford to order in some real session string players for an afternoon?

Other than that, at first blush, the album is decent. It's Tomlin doing what Tomlin does best - singing cleanly-produced, sing-a-long-able worship anthems. So his voice is too high...drop the key a couple of tones when singing it as a church.

The real treat for me was the acoustic tracks at the end. Just as Hillsong's new "Chapel" album (called "Yahweh"), the acoustic versions breathe new life into these songs and help me envisage how I could sing them in my local church on a Sunday morning. I almost wish the whole album had been recorded in this way (with a couple of bonus "rock" versions at the end?!)

The one bone I have with Tomlin is that his lyrics can seem mass-produced / obvious / cliche. Most of what Tomlin says on this album has been said before. To have some lyrics that cause me to stop and say "Wow, I've never thought of God like THAT!" is what I long for in today's worship music.
