Amazing
I honestly haven't listened to this entire album yet, but I couldn't help myself from wanting to pay homage to Richie Haven's cover of "Tombstone Blues." Being a big Dylan fan and having heard many (un)successful covers of his work, I'm absolutely blown down by the way Havens "owns" this song. Honestly, I can't imagine anyone else ever signing it. Other real gems here are Calexico's "Going to Acapulco," and Marcus Carl Franklin playing "When the Ship Comes In." There are also a lot of Dylan imitations on this album. Some of which are almost indistinguishable from the man himself. But overall, I was glad to pay the price of the entire thing if just to hear Havens ripping Tombstone Blues right out from under Dyaln's feet.
In praise of the wavering of identity.
As a very old Dylan fan, old enough to have been deeply disappointed by him for more than a couple of decades, this film, as well as the “No Direction Home” bio have redeemed Dylan for me in many ways. It was a profound revelation to hear all the different individuals and groups play Dylan’s music in their own way. A wonderful collection, a great tribute to Dylan’s vitality and place in the history of American music.
Great songs from a great movie
These are pretty amazing covers of Bob Dylan songs, a true Dylan fan should buy these songs and watch the movie along with it.
