Album Review

Dream Theater's first album with new vocalist James LaBrie is an excellent mix of progressive metal stylings with heartfelt vocals and thought-provoking lyrics. Guitarist John Petrucci, bassist John Myung, and drummer Mike Portnoy, all of whom trained at Berklee, show impressive ability on their respective instruments. Kevin Moore's keyboards weave strongly through the intricately constructed songs, while operatically trained LaBrie shows an impressive range with his tenor. Standout tracks include the complex "Metropolis, Pt. 1," the Shakespeare-influenced "Pull Me Under" (also released as a single and video), the dramatic "Take the Time," and the 11-minute, thoughtful "Learning to Live." Dream Theater's musicianship and songwriting are a cut above the norm; this is a very good disc.

Overrated...

This Dream Theater album is very overrated by DT fans and I don't know why. Its an alright album, i like the songs Surrounded, Metropolis Pt 1, Under a Glass Moon, and of course Pull me Under but other than that, for me, the album just seems to sink into the vast collection of what Dream Theater has to offer. There are far better albums by DT such as, Train of Thought, Metropolis Part 2, and Octavarium and that's only a few. Don't get me wrong, Dream Theater is an epic band and each and every member of the band has a crazy amount of talent and they have many deep meanings in their music as well but there are only a few songs that really pop out at me on this particular album.

Dream Theater at their best!

This is hands down Dream Theaters best album. Amazing solos, musical style, riffs etc. This is definately one of the best progressive music albums in history if not the best!

The best all round dream theater album

This is Dream Theater's best all round album. It includes pop rock elements, heavy metal elements, and most importantly progressive elements. This is an album that anyone can enjoy from metalheads to pop rockers, but fans of progressive music will enjoy this the most.
