Eleven years since their last album, Ratt return with 2010’s Infestation and take hair metal back to the mid-‘80s, even as its members lurk around 50 years old. Close your eyes and it’s the same attack that made 1984’s Out of the Cellar an essential piece of the lite-metal puzzle. Guitarist Robbin Crosby passed in 2002, but singer Stephen Pearcy reunited with Warren DeMartini and Bobby Blotzer and added Quiet Riot’s Carlos Cavazo to the band while writing up tunes that sound like they belong to a band twenty-five years younger. Pearcy’s still a leering, swaggering partyhound with a nose for wild women and DeMartini and Cavazo whip out the twin guitar attack and the vintage solos with the same kick and precision of old. “Eat Me Up Alive” is a metalhead’s anthem. “Look Out Below” features some prime riffage and “Last Call” features the ensemble vocals and deep, cavernous echo that made these guys such a formidable group back in their day.

Finally, a big hair metal band that unabashedly makes a retro ‘80s album that will appeal to their core fan base. There’s no down tuning, nu-metal, rap-rock or anything new from the last 25 years on this record and that’s the way it should be. If you’re looking for Ratt to write about corporate greed or global warming then this album is not for you, but if you’re looking for sizzling guitars, a driving rhythm section, frivolous (but fun) lyrics and sneering vocals (that only Stephen Pearcy can deliver) than you’ve come to the right place. “Eat Me Up Alive” is a straight-ahead rocker with Van Halen influenced guitars that opens the album with the amps clearly set to ‘11’. “A Little Too Much” is your traditional sing-a-long arena rock song with a big chorus and an even bigger hook. “Lost Weekend” sounds like a distant cousin of the Ratt classic, “Lack Of Communication”. “Take A Big Bite” is another guitar driven track that you won’t be able to get out of your head while “Take Me Home” is the power ballad that Ratt never managed to chart with in the’80s. With Infestation, Ratt have not gambled on trying to figure out what’s “cool” in 2010, but instead have placed all their bets on party rock anthems with loud guitars. Ah, welcome to 1987! You’ll be glad you came.
Ratt album ,best of the year in my books
What an amazing album! I can't stop playing the cd or listening too it on my iPhone . Straight up old school ratt . If only other eighties rock and metal bands could go back to their roots half as good as this album. By far one of my favorite ratt albums . Fits right in too compliment thier first two albums . Well done guys!
