iTunes Review
Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ billowing cloud of avant-rock is invaded here by a clutch of disco synths, exploring new areas of tempo, personality and atmosphere for this New York art-punk trio. Guitarist Nick Zinner steers the course with imaginative guitar work, drummer Brian Chase probably hasn’t had this much fun drumming on a record before, and singer Karen O wraps herself in electrical-taped chiffon for disco drag-outs “Zero,” “Heads Will Roll” and “Dragon Queen.” Production from David Sitek (TV On the Radio) and Nick Launay ensure It’s Blitz! is a contemporary affair. The Deluxe Edition includes bonus acoustic versions of “Soft Shock,” “Skeletons,” “Hysteric,” and “Runaway,” plus iTunes exclusive track “Faces.”
Customer Reviews
not what I expected
I felt the band tried to play it too safe with this one. I was disappointed not because the songs sucked but because it felt too clean for YYY. If this was their way of experimenting, then there were no in your face explosions but there were also no ground breaking discoveries as well.
Not the YYY's you might be used to
I bought the actual CD today, and after listening to it a bunch... Most of the songs are something you'd expect to close an album with. "Skeletons", "Hysteric" and "Little Shadow" are their mellowest songs yet, even softer than "Turn Into" off Show Your Bones, or "Modern Romance" from Fever to Tell. In keeping with a more "dance" (some say) oriented style, the drums are quite artificial. It sounds like they used a drum machine or something for most of it, which makes a huge difference. Brian Chase's raw drumming in previous albums is nearly absent. "Zero", "Heads Will Roll" and "Dragon Queen" are the only "dancy" tracks really. If the the synth and drum machine sounds were replaced with the tone of real instruments and a bit of distortion, these songs would fit in quite well with the band's earlier releases. They're not really such a huge departure if you think about them that way. Those who prefer a more familiar YYY's sound will find it in "Dull Life" and "Shame and Fortune". I wish there was one more heavier song in the album to balance everything. That' probably why "Skeletons", arguably the mellowest song in the album, is the fourth track. If it was last, the last half of It's Blitz would be too boring. All in all, it's pretty good. It won't make your ears hurt after listening to it a few times in a row, like Fever to Tell. Every YYY's release has been distinct, and if anything, It's Blitz! makes me more excited to see what they will come up with next.
Yeah Yeah Yeah!
Finally a new cd from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Their sound is a bit different but overall a strong album. Zero and Heads will role will most likely be club hits in the future but soft shock, dull life and dragon queen are my favourite due to their unique sound. If you have never heard of the Yeah Yeah Yeah's before, this is a pretty tame cd for them. I recommend getting this album.
