Album Review

A quirky but hard-rockin' band drawing on thrash metal, hard rock and punk influences, the obscure Tad made a memorable, if underrated, contribution to grunge and alternative rock with 8-Way Santa. In contrast to the consistently dark and pessimistic tendencies of many other grunge units, Tad (named after lead singer Tad Doyle) comes across as more fun and lighthearted than anything. Titles like "3-D Witch Hunt," "Jack Pepsi" (a goofy parody of truck driver songs) and "Hedge Hog" point to the fact that Tad isn't without a healthy sense of humor. At times, this abrasive, freewheeling foursome almost sounds like grunge's answer to Aerosmith. But unfortunately, Tad never escaped obscurity.

Stormtroopers of Grunge

TAD was one of the pioneers of the Seattle grunge scene in the late 1980s, and 8-Way Santa sees them at the height of their powers. Under the guidance of Butch Vig (who produced Nirvana’s Nevermind later that same year) Tad’s sound is more polished here than in earlier efforts, but the band still maintains its growl thanks to front man Tad Doyle’s sludge guitar and sandpaper-rough vocals. “Jinx” is one of Tad’s all-time best, and it’s a killer of an opener, but in truth there are very few weak moments here. Were it not for legal troubles over the album’s original artwork, AND over the artwork for the single “Jack Pepsi,” 8-Way Santa undoubtedly would have gone on to very big sales, and Tad to even greater things. Oh well, whatever, never mind. But this is well worth a listen.

Tad Rules! For Grunge and 90's fans only!

A really awesome album all the songs are really awesome songs like Jinx, Jack Pepsi, Delinquent, and Giant Killer. They're all awesome songs, but iTunes should get their other albums such as "Infrared Riding Hood" and "Inhaler". Awesome band makes an awesome album!

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s

Tad were one of the heaviest Seattle grunge bands, fashioning a loud, slow, lumbering grind that — unlike many of their peers — was inspired far more by '70s metal than punk. Less melodic and accessible than grunge's biggest names, Tad's music simply steamrolled over everything in its way, which likely contributed to their being the last homegrown band on Sub Pop's grunge-era roster to snag a major-label deal. Although the whole band dressed like Northwestern lumberjacks, their redneck...
