iTunes Review

M.I.A.’s debut Arular, with its roaring electro and outspoken calls to third world unity, stood out as one of the most critically polarizing and creatively bracing releases of 2005. For her followup M.I.A. has largely adhered to the chaotic template that originally brought her fame. Standout track “Paper Planes” comes off like a ragga-tinged schoolyard chant perforated by gunfire, while the frenetic stomp of lead single “Boyz” would sound right at home next to any Timbaland helmed club anthem. Indeed Timbaland’s world-spanning sonic aesthetic is clearly a touchstone for M.I.A., yet her beats are touched with an air of pseudo-militant righteousness and barely restrained dissonance sure to appeal to fanciers of the pop avant-garde. Critical beard pulling aside, Kala, stands out as an album full of a sense of undeniable energy missing from most modern club music. When M.I.A. growls “I’m knocking on the doors of your Hummer, Hummer” she clearly wants to be seen as a carjacker in the throes of a dangerous political awakening. Though this may be something of a fantasy, the unhinged roar of Kala is full of truly frightening and joyously enervating sounds, and deserves to be heard by adventurous listeners.

No Sophomore Slump Here

When I first heard 'Kala' I wasn't expecting it to be so different than Arular. The main difference is that Arular was very consistent, while with this one it goes all over the place to make an eventually more rewarding album, after you've given it several listens. Bird Flu, Boyz, Jimmy, XR2, and Paper Planes are immediately likeable and very dancey. 20 Dollar, The Turn, Mango Pickle Down River, and Hussel take a few listens to appreciate, but they are very strong tracks. World Town sounds like it an Arular B-side, but it's still very good. Come Around is probably the weakest track, so it's a good thing the whole album wasn't produced by Timbaland. MIA has shown her true talent this time, seeing as she co-produced the bulk of the album this time, making this album even more unique and exuding her personality.

FINALLY!

I was in Vancouver in a Virgin Megastore in 2004 when I first heard M.I.A. Out of nowhere, over the sound system burst the spectacular 'Sunshowers'. I remember that nobody else really seemed interested and that when I asked about where to find this amazing song I had heard I was lead upstairs to a back corner where only 3 copies of the album were available. When I got back to my room I was intstantly hooked! I have since played the cd so much it's hard to believe that I haven't ever gotten sick of any of the songs on it, since everyone else around me has. Finally it has arrived! A new album! And, of course, it is insanely good. It's hard to choose favourites on 'Kala', but mine would have to be 'Bamboo Banga', 'Boyz' & '20 Dollar'. They are so new and different for her. I am so excited for the next one! I hope it won't be another 3 years but if so, I'll wait.. I see that 'Kala" is quite high on the iTunes Top Albums list right now! I hope it makes it to #1! It definitely deserves to be there instead of in a back corner somewhere!!

Best Album Of 2007

Now that 2007 is over. I can say with certainty that this is the Best Album Of 2007! It combines so many genres which makes this album so great. Most people know her from her song 'Paper Planes'. But to tell you the truth it isn't even the best song on the album. Some other great songs are 20 Dollar, Boyz, XR2 and Bamboo Banga. Hopefully she will make another album in the future!

If you read a lot about new music on the Web, odds are pretty good that, at some point between the September 2004 release of "Galang" and the March 2005 release of Arular, you were struck with the urge to turn your computer off or maybe even heave it out of a nearby window. If you don't read a lot about new music on the Web, the preceding sentence indicates how bewildering and draining the chatter about M.I.A. became. Arular, M.I.A.'s first album, leaked well before its official release, allowing...
