Great CD from one of rock
In the last two weeks I've gotten three new CD's from artists I like and have every album/CD they've released. Peter Gabriel's orchestrated CD was very hit and miss. Kate Bush’s 50 Words for snow is the weakest and least creative album she’s done and I was so waiting for that CD. Yesterday my copy of Landfall by Carol Pope came in the mail. I was worried it’s going to be a third strike. It wasn’t.
From the opening cords of Viral I was hooked. Great energy, word play and imagery and of course the sensuality characteristic in her music. Also some very creative and varied music – the arrangement with the violins on Tourniquet being a great example. Most importantly the music has emotion. Carol Pope has one of the most distinctive and characteristic voices making music. It’s too bad we don’t hear it more often.
Worst thing about the CD - it's too short. I realilzed this as it played while I drove to and from work. It's barely a half hour. It's not that I mind paying for a short CD but we get new Carol Pope music so rarely. Transcend was 6 years ago.
So tonight as I drove home again I played this CD. Once in the house tonight I played Gabriel again. Then I played Kate Bush again. My opinion didn't change. By far the best of the three was Landfall.
Let's hope we don't have to wait 6 years for more new material.

I listened to this and just kept coming back to it....even though so many other artists this year bored me (like Kate Bush). This record is a find! "Viral" and "Shining Path" are pounding cool electronica with Pope's amazing powerful vocals sailing on top of the music. "Landfall" is simply brilliant, and with Rufus Wainwright's help, this song is one of my favorites of 2011....just defiant and powerful. "Tell Me" is perhaps my favorite, with it's dark cynical undertones......though the more I hear "God=Love" and "My Flame" the more I love them.
Love this Album!
Love almost every track on this album, 'God = Love' has to be my favourite. With this release Carole proves that she remains a creative and relevant force in Canadian music. Two Christmas wishes - that this album gets the airplay it deserves especially on the student and alternative radio stations, and that we see Carole on a cross-Canada tour in 2012.
