Album Review

For their third studio album, Karkwa put together a batch of atmospheric, well-crafted rock songs that mirrored the music of Radiohead and Coldplay. Le Volume du Vent opens with a soft melody that moves into a grandiose, sweeping arrangement centered around lead vocalist Louis-Jean Cormier's melodies. The music only gets more sweeping and grandiose from there. String sections sway wildly, compositional styles are played with, and Cormier croons in French in front of it all. The singsong format of "Oublie Pas" contrasts strongly with the grandeur of "Deux Lampadaires," and the nearly acoustic balladry of the title track sits apart from them both. The compositions are solid throughout. They're full of basic hooks and riffs with an apparent eye toward marketability, but those hooks and riffs aren't entirely gratuitous. Twinkling pianos in "Le Solstice" mirror elements of the Police, and the melancholy directions in "Dormir le Jour" echo portions of Soundgarden's darkness. There's a lot tucked away in this album, packed extremely densely. It's likely to take a couple of listens to get it all.

Karkwa ma nouvelle joie

Let me start by saying that I am not fluent in French but I am SO in love with this album and Karkwa! It’s true that the iTunes free track turned me onto them and compelled me to check out more. So glad I did! If you appreciate great music, you will love this. Compteur - Probably the favourite; can’t get enough of it! Really rich music and great vocals. Deux Lampadaires – a mellower one, vocals are lovely! Rich instrumentally…is that a banjo in there sounding so hip & cool? Échapper au sort – vocal wise, this could almost be a continuation of ‘Compteur’ and is probably the second favourite. Lovely strings, piano and other instrumentation. At some point this song gave me shivers and continues to do so. Oublie Pas – it’s the first track I ever heard and it totally endeared them to me. The track that compelled me to buy the album and want to hear more, more, more. Le frimas – a short instrumental track Le temps mort – mournful piano; excellent. La façade – a great uptempo, faster-paced song. Nice piano & some strings. Love the vocal and musical build in the last minute or so. Mieux respirer – starts out quieter and builds - awesome! Combien – some great drums happening in this one + piano. Just love it. Le volume du vent – an instrumental one for the most part with vocal effects Le solstice – this track has an ominous sound with the guitars and keys. The last couple of minutes here just shine; superb! Dormir le jour – dreamy vocals here…piano, guitar, everything is excellent all around. À la chaîne – another uptempo one, sounding fabulous throughout and includes a wonderful childrens’ choir at the end.

incroyable
