Commands your attention

There have been many great albums in 2008, including Karkwa’s “Le volume du vent,” which led me to this, their second, earlier album. This is an endlessly enjoyable album. It is musically masterful and completely melodic. The vocals are great throughout; the music commands your attention. You do not need to understand the lyrics to appreciate how great it is. Aiming to be helpful (esp. when reviews are lacking), I usually go track-by-track to give a sense of the songs: La fuite – an up tempo, rock one all the way through, featuring pounding piano. M'empêcher de sortir – guitars are a huge highlight, (The) Edgelike, but there’s a lot going on here. Another highlight, in the last 1:20 or so of the song, is the focus on the snare drum and its ‘rat-a-tat-tat’ march, as well as the electronic effects; really cool. La marche – an up tempo one, piano driven and also dominated by drums (quite great, actually), towards the end features brief backing vocals that remind you of India. L'épaule froide - has such a quiet start, builds so gradually with all the instruments and effects coming in, the voice gaining depth too, all of it sweetly sneaking up on you…it’s a wonderful, beautiful build. I love this track; it is probably my very favourite. Vertige – a catchy track and definitely a favourite. Synth, organ, drums, cymbal-work are the mainstays; guitar goes pretty intense towards the end. Pili-Pili – a great, grittier track, and a departure from the others. If Tom Waits sang in French, I think this is what you would get, but more melodic. I also feel this would be at home played on a bayou. It’s quite funky and I totally dig it. Le coup d'état – Wow. Can you say rock anthem? No doubt this topped the charts in Quebec. Intensely guitar driven, featuring some cool electronica, strings, and a nice juxtaposition with the staccato piano towards the end; the vocals really reach. Les vapeurs – moderates between quiet and hard. Starts out very quietly with pretty piano, then builds, picks up big time midway through with all instruments, wonderfully string heavy towards the end. Red light – Love this one. Catchy from the start and it doesn’t let up. The groovy vibe is very engaging. I only wish this one went on longer. Vrai – not quiet, not rocky, easygoing and very melodic. Les froids fonds – quiet to begin, melancholy overtone, all instruments are very crisply heard including some great effects. Around the 2:50 mark, the music transitions to something different but connected; it works. Alaska – features some interesting, intense guitars, synth and great effects; modulates between the quiet and heavy. Overall it’s a big, crashing tune. It’s really too bad that this hasn’t had more attention in predominantly English speaking areas of Canada. I’m really glad that Karkwa is now part of my music loving life. If you are into Radiohead and Sigur Rós, you are likely to appreciate this. If you don’t have “Le volume du vent,” it’s a must have as well.
