Lovely

Though I first heard of her work via Broken Social Scene, Leslie Feist is unlike anything, with the exception of Fiona Apple, that I've heard from a female solo artist in the past 50 years. Her melodies are wonderful and refreshing. Her voice is calming, yet empowering. Even in songs like Gatekeeper where we barely hear anything else except her, she is an exceptional change in our musical pace. She is one of the best things to come out of Canada in the past short while and this album is one for everyone. Gatekeeper: A nice calm opener. 5* Mushaboom: Though the singing kinda weirded me out, I love the music in the background. 5* Let It Die: A darker contrast to Mushaboom; almost juxtaposing it. It's brilliant. 5* One Evening: Really shows the power of Leslie's voice. 5* Leisure Suite: Alright, but overshadowed by the other tracks. 4* L'amour ne dure pas toujours: La portion francais de ceci. La musique est incroyable. 5* Lonely Lonely: Another track where it's all her. 5* When I Was A Young Girl: I don't understand why I don't like this. The bass is cool. 3* Secret Heart: The lower string instruments at the beginning make this track good. 4* Inside and Out: The best thing Leslie's ever sang. A great cover. 5* Now At Last: A beautiful piano ballad and a wonderful conclusion. 5* What more can I say? Leslie Feist may not be for everyone, but her voice is a touching and charming addition to any collection. Fans of Fiona Apple, KT Tunstall and Stars will find some merit in Leslie's works and I think everybody should at least give Inside and Out a chance. This is a truely spectacular album.

Atmospheric

Ten years from now, Feist's Let It Die will be a rare 'soundtrack of your life' album that will immediately bring you back to your life events when you first listened to it repeatedly - and you will listen to it repeatedly. The atmosphere is contemporary and timeless at once, bringing together Joni Mitchell and Daniel Lanois to create a sparsely produced sound that puts Feist's voice and lyrics in the forefront. Secret Heart is a great interpretation of a lesser know favourite Ron Sexsmith song, personalized and performed so that most won't recognize it as a cover. If you enjoy Let It Die, check out "Shine" by Daniel Lanois.

outstanding, gripping, soulful, playful album

Heard Leslie first on CBC, and I was blown away by her voice and the acoustic melodies played. This album is fantastic. Her voice is soulful and wise, but has a sort of innocent childlike quality that melts in your heart not in your head. Great stuff. Catchy vocal hooks in Mushaboom, to the 70s-esque Inside and Out, to intimate powerful Lonely Lonely and the Secret Heart cover... amazing album I can't say enough good things. Congratulations Ms. Feist it's an amazing piece of work.

Born Leslie Feist in Amherst, Nova Scotia, singer/songwriter Feist relocated to Calgary at a young age and got her start playing in an all-girl punk band named Placebo (not to be confused with the U.K. modern rock act of the same name). After winning a battle-of-the-bands contest, Placebo (whose members were still in high school) played their first gig opening for the Ramones in 1991, and for the next five years, Feist sharpened her rock & roll ways alongside her bandmates.
