Album Review

Like their moniker implies, the Unicorns are whimsical, riding in a mythical world of lo-fi experimental pop. The Montreal trio (with help from several friends) is strangely lovable and lovably strange, sort of like a lo-fi version of the Flaming Lips. Bookended with the titles "I Don't Wanna Die" and "Ready to Die" (which abruptly ends the album), Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone? has some accessible moments, while balancing some ambitious ideas with synths, recorder, pennywhistle, and clarinet. "I Was Born (A Unicorn)" best sums up their mindset: "We're the unicorns/We're more than horses/We're the unicorns and we're people too." Add to that a trilogy of songs that somehow ties together something about ghosts and a song that critiques U.S. foreign policy and you've got an idea of the range here. Even if their shows supposedly involve puppets, homeless people, or fighting bandmembers, these unicorns are, for the most part, real.

Customer Reviews

New Fav

This is my new favourite band, every song gives you that smiley feeling. I guess they call it hapiness. A great band, check em out, you wont be dissapointed. I especially like there recorder arrangements.

Greatest Album Ever

this is the greatest album ever, too bad the unicorns broke up. The best songs are Les Os & Tuff Ghost. But every song is good, they take it home in every sinlge track.

Musical Perfection

The Unicorns are my favourite band and WWCOHWWG is my favourite album. I can't think of a single bad thing to say about this album, Its perfect. There were a lot of good guest musicians and interesting instruments used. Every song is really creative, my favourites are Child Star and Les Os. I never get tired of hearing these songs they are great. Buy this album, you won't regret it.

Years Active: '00s

Yet another promising Canadian indie rock band, Montreal-via-British Columbia's Unicorns began in the late '90s, when high-school friends Nick (Neil) Diamonds and Alden Ginger began crafting their roundabout, lo-fi, but distinctly catchy music. Cheap keyboards, loud guitars, and real and mechanical drums surround the duo's skewed and often spiritual lyrics, and their live shows can also include films, puppet shows, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
