Customer Reviews

great sound, great lyrics, great promise

Coming out of nowhere, this album is steadily growing steam not only for highlighting just how underrated Canadian Hip-Hop has been over the past decade, but also for showing the promise of two new artists on the scene. From the title alone, it's pretty clear that the album is ambitious, but what is suprising is how often the tracks hit the right nerve- there's a consistent theme and texture throughout the album which might be attributed both to Expedyte's focused and clever lyricisim as well as Metropolis Votary's intricately crafted beats (listen a couple of times to catch the meticulously arranged drum tracks).

Expedyte's flow is clean and forceful, and can easily carry the entire album. Nonetheless, some of the most memorable tracks might be Sunny Daze with Louis Logic, 2Mex and Phakt. Other standouts are appearances by Copywrite, Vast Aire, CRayz Walz and Empuls on the furious single Hunger, as well as Wu-Tang's Killah Priest on Lights Are Golden. What truly carries this album, however, is Metropolis Votary's production. Already highlighted on the Legato Block EP, Metropolis has a knack for taking incredibly disparate source material, combining them and making them greater than the sum of their parts. Indeed, the craftsmanship seen throughout the album, showcased on the stunning introduction, 'Honesty' and Metromental, warrants grabbing this album all by itself.

Expedyte and Metropolis have great chemistry, and together with some stunning guest appearances and truly dedicated production, have put out an album well worth a listen. Picking up steam with every day, this debut has broken these ambitious artists well out of their shell. Let's hope they get something else out soon.

@ Ricky Steamboat

I'm guessing that you know Expedyte & Metro personally, lol? But yeah... it's a decent album; although I enjoyed his music better at the Paragon show in Halifax. Too bad Ill Bill had to throw a hissy-fit at the soundman, though 
