Album Review

Out of all of Madonna's albums, Like a Prayer is her most explicit attempt at a major artistic statement. Even though it is apparent that she is trying to make a "serious" album, the kaleidoscopic variety of pop styles on Like a Prayer is quite dazzling. Ranging from the deep funk of "Express Yourself" and "Keep It Together" to the haunting "Oh Father" and "Like a Prayer," Madonna displays a commanding sense of songcraft, making this her best and most consistent album.

Easily her most ambitious record

'Like A Prayer' was the sound of Madonna taking full advantage of her position to make her first major artistic statement, and her most personal too. The album is brimming with catchy hooks, fantastic arrangements and various styles that showed off Madonna's pop versatility. Side Note: The iTunes edition of 'Like A Prayer' is not technically true to the original: The version 'Express Yourself' is an extended dance version of the song; not the original shorter version which appeared on the physical album.

Certainly Madonna's best.

I am a true, long time Madonna fan, and this is her most accomplished album. I remember purchasing the 'tape', back in 1989. I was so excited and the liner notes smelled like patchouli oil! The album is saturated with personal confessions, and sophisticated pop beats. A stand out track is Love Song, a little known duet with Prince. What a collaboration. Cherish and Dear Jessie, are also great upbeat pop ballads, that have tremendous production.

Like a piece of art!

I think this is her most artistic album to date. She really proved that she was a true artist with this album and not just a pop tart, and probably shut a lot of people up in the process. I was only three years old when this came out, so I do not remember this era at the time but I discovered this about 6 years ago, and I’m glad I did.

It’s a very personal, confessional album and I like that it uses almost all real instruments. It gives it more of an organic sound which fits with the rawness of the lyrical content. My favourite songs are the title track, “Express Yourself”, “Keep It Together”, “Dear Jessie” and “Til Death Do Us Part”. (The Shep Pettibone remixes of the first three songs mentioned are also great. I recommend them as well as checking out the import release “Remixed Prayers”).

All-in-all, a fantastic release and definitely one of her best albums. Every Madonna fan should have this.

After stars reach a certain point, it's easy to forget what they became famous for and concentrate solely on their personas. Madonna is such a star. Madonna rocketed to stardom so quickly in 1984 that it obscured most of her musical virtues. Appreciating her music became even more difficult as the decade wore on, as discussing her lifestyle became more common than discussing her music. However, one of Madonna's greatest achievements is how she manipulated the media and the public...
