iTunes Review
The Walkmen crank out a tough factory rhythm for “Angela Surf City.” It’s the sound of man battling against the machine. The drums turn things dark and greasy like much great rock ‘n’ roll. But the band operates on a different level. They add lightness to cosmopolitan-sounding tunes such as “Juveniles,” “Blue As Your Blood” and “Stranded,” where singer Hamilton Leithauser sings with an extra lounge lizard in his voice. There’s a somber undertow to “Victory” while “All My Great Designs” uses a great amount of air in its arrangement to make a greater impact. The band’s minimalism is quite appealing. “Woe is Me” is actually quite quick and bright, despite its title. “Torch Song” could be an old R&B/Doo Wop ballad from the 1950s. “While I Shovel the Snow” is another aching ballad with a sense of wit mixed in with its tears. The title track and “Orange Sunday” bring things to a solemn and quiet close.

Return to form.
In all honesty, this album is complete return to form for the New York rockers. After the beautiful, intimate and aptly titled, "You And Me", The Walkmen have come full circle. Perhaps missing the pure emotion that drove songs like "The Rat", but still carrying the hard Indie Rock connotations that make this band great. Hamilton Leithauser's ceiling reaching vocals are in their best shape. Matt Barrick's unique hard-edged drumming is also welcomed back in all it's untamed monkey with two drum sticks glory. In addition to this, the sustaining song writing that makes The Walkmen such a damn good band is in full force. I've seen the Walkmen live twice and neither time have I been disappointed or even felt ho-hum about the experience; they are simply an amazing band with a bright future in the music business. Excellent job gentlemen!
Lisbon
Beautiful songs that sound like being drunk in the rain with your very best friend. Love it! Especially Stranded.
Hamilton's larynx probably goes on fire about once a week , he sings so hard.
They're terrrific live too. I mean really terrific.
