Lone Bird
If you've looked at the music charts lately, dominated by acts such as Lady GaGa, Ke$ha and Ludacris, you may wonder what happened to real music (not to mention musicians with real names). I'm talking about music lovingly crafted on actual instruments, with meaningful lyrics and melodies that stay with you long after you've switched off your iPod. Vancouverite Jim Foster has created just such an album with Lone Bird, a stellar example of what happens when the music is allowed to speak for itself. Tracks such as "Fifties Wreck", "NIMBY" and "Dealin' With It" will have you reaching for the volume control to make the most of the straight-up rock sound, but the artist is not averse to slowing it down a bit, with moody acoustic songs like "I Am A Photograph" and "Well Well Well". The final track, "Spaghetti West/High Gretsch Drifter", is in a category all its own, an instrumental piece that is a showcase for Foster's outstanding guitar skills.
If the question is, "Where has all the real music gone?", Lone Bird may well be the answer.
