When Thrice gave producer Dave Schiffman the demos for its seventh studio album, he thought the group was making a grunge record. But the rock power overflowing from Major/Minor is more of a reaction to the quartet’s preceding LP, Beggars, which was somewhat of an electro-emo affair. Even before “Yellow Belly” opens, we hear buzz from a vintage tube amplifier, hinting at the punchy guitar tones about to fly from your speakers. The song cleverly blends a nod to old-school emo with a tastefully modern and upfront production that sounds like it’s coming straight off the studio’s mixing monitors. “Promises” plays like an homage to sounds from the Pacific Northwest of the early ‘90s, replete with gigantic guitar distortion grinding against harmonic leads as Dustin Kensrue rails against the dissolve of marriage in society. Similarly, “Cataracts” chugs with meaty riffs and winding leads.
