Canadian eh!
Like the great country of Canada, this album is huge and diverse. The boys have remembered their roots with a twist, as seen from their own boots. Fantastic song writing that thinks locally and speaks globally.
Matador Sunset
The sophomore album from The Warped 45's has several obvious 'hits', apparent by it's continued climb up the charts since the album release at the end of May. The 45's are at the top of their game on Matador Sunset, with strong melodies, and a luxurious depth of sounds not present on their previous album. Once again, their outstanding use of harmony continues unabated, which partnered with their hauntingly poignant lyrics, draws one deeper into the album. Matador Sunset is certainly more 'produced' and less raw than earlier work but this album has a lot more sophistication and subtlety to it, the raunchy 'Grime' not withstanding!.
Honestly, I have to say that I am totally in love with this band. I am so excited by the strength and eloquence of their lyrics. A critic from The Waterloo Record, said in his review of Matador Sunset, that the new album sounded "like William Faulkner sitting down over a bottle of Jim Beam with the Allman Brothers.", and I have to agree; although my literary comparison would be with Cormac McCarthy for the unrelenting and visceral imagery that clings to the spine of each and every song, from 'Pale Horse', to the dirty bar stomp Live Bait'.
I can't wait for a live album because the Warped 45's are one of the best live bands I have ever seen, anywhere. Period.
