Album Review

Atlanta's Andy Hull and company received considerable praise leading up to Mean Everything to Nothing, Manchester Orchestra's second official full-length release. With that praise and hype came the attention of producer Joe Chiccarelli (the Shins/My Morning Jacket), who adds enough muscle, sound, and fury to the music to match Hull's frequent growls and rants. The resulting dynamic attack will likely please the screamo crowd, as songs like "Shake It Out" feature the kind of angsty lyrics (fighting the Lord), yelping Isaac Brock meets-nu-metal-swagger, and power chords that thrill a young audience. More savvy, or at least older, music fans will be able to pick out the influences, from the Kurt Cobain wail and Nirvana-like grunge pop of "In My Teeth," to the Smashing Pumpkins-by-way-of-Jane's Addiction guitars of the catchy and earnest "I've Got Friends," to the wounded-voice Bright Eyes of "The River," to the all-out Neutral Milk Hotel borrowing that is "100 Dollars."

Incredible

Easily one of the best albums I've ever heard. It may even be better than "I'm Like A Virgin Losing A Child" (and that's saying a lot!). Each song on this album delivers in it's own special way. "Pride" is HUGE! Buy this.

good rock for rockers

I used to believe that Rock and Roll as we knew it obtained perfection in 2003 and then shuffled off of this mortal coil. The bands you hear these days are so over-produced and have an aura of insincerity to them. Until I was perchance surfing through the consumerist haven known as the itunes store. Sometimes you get lucky and there is something truly ***ing amazing right there on the front page. I think itunes is stalking me. I always see 'updating genius' scroll across itunes. The great consumer culture is remembering MY taste and is only giving me music that I like. For once, the individual is in control of their cultural experience! To make a long story short, I found this band, Manchester Orchestra, who are not in fact from Manchester, England but Atlanta, Georgia. That's kind of like how the band 'Of Montreal' isn't actually from Montreal. The Manchester Orchestra is the band that has re-established my faith in current rock and roll!

just got back from a concert where they opened for silversun pickups, they were soo good that we chanted for an encore even though they were just an opening band

As led by singer/songwriter/guitarist Andy Hull, the maturity of Manchester Orchestra's songwriting belied the fact that the bandmembers were barely legal when their group sprung into existence. Based in Atlanta, Georgia, the indie rock outfit grew out of songs that Hull had begun writing while attending high school. Encouraged by positive response, he opted for home schooling during his senior year, which afforded him enough time to compose and record in the studio. Friends began...
