Album Review

Meat, the follow-up to 2008's Los Manlicious, is as eclectic as any Hawksley Workman album, with a track list that includes ballads, political protest songs, and eccentric breakup anthems. Recorded in tandem with Milk, the album was released on Workman's own independent label in January 2010.

HW's best since...

I think that Meat is a stronger album than Los Manilicious, and possibly Between the Beautifuls as well. The production is really strong, and his vision is clearer than it has been since Treeful of Starling. Ultimately, if you love Hawksley, you're going to find some new favourite songs here. "You Don't Just Want to Break Me (You Want To Tear Me Apart)" is, for me, one of the best songs that he's ever written.

I just don't know

I love Hawksley Workman's music generally, and even when I don't love it, I still appreciate it. Some of the songs on this album are really hard to even appreciate. Vampire Bats is kind of like an assault on my ear drums. It's like some bizarre new genre of industrial pop. I hope he comes out with something a little more low key next time.

solid album, but not his best

Listening to the tracks on this albun, you really realise how far Hawksley has come in his career. While he tends to change his sound quite a bit from album to album, there is always a certain uniqueness in his music, most likely due to his standout vocals. This album is no different, and While certainly not his best work by any stretch of the imagination, it marks a vast improvement over Los Manlicious. After a somewhat weak forray into a heavier sound, Hawksley has once again found his stride in a fairly mellow album. This isn't to say there aren't some songs that stray more towads rock, as (We Ain't No) Vampire Bats is markedly more rock than the rest of the album. However I find that Workman is at his best when he's playing a more stripped down and real sound. My final verdict is that while this album is certainly no (Last Night We Were) The Delicious Wolves, it is a vast improvement over the misguided venture that was Los Manlicious.

Biography

Born: March 04, 1975 in Canada

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

The story of Canadian singer/songwriter Hawksley Workman is equally compelling whether you take it as fact or fantasy. Workman, who would eventually launch a celebrated career as solo artist and indie rock producer, was born and raised in Bay Lake. From this point on, however, the tale gets somewhat hazy and wholly bizarre, owing in large part to the short, ongoing biography published on his website. Self-styled by the artist himself, it seemed to be a partially invented, quasi-fictional account...
