iTunes Review

There are few shades of grey in Flyleaf’s world — this Christian combo confronts sin and redemption in the starkest and most apocalyptic of terms. On their sophomore album Memento Mori, the Texas quintet clinches its hold on Gothic-tinged nü-metal while deepening its lyric thrust. This time, singer Lacey Mosley plays down her penchant for screaming, though her intensity remains undiminished. The band’s fervent faith is caught in bold colors, whether the song offers paeans to God (“Beautiful Bride”) or expresses an aching need for salvation (“Again,” “In the Dark”). As before, the sense of desperation embodied in Mosley’s voice is Flyleaf’s most distinctive feature — she’s particularly arresting when railing against evil and corruption, as in the scathing “Swept Away” and “The Kind.” Memento Mori’s sound is dark and astringent, with “Treasure” adding a dreamy touch and “Chasm” moving with a near-swagger. Guitarists Sameer Bhattacharya and Jared Hartmann achieve some elegant textures amidst the overall blistering sound of the album.

I'm disappointed

I must say, I liked their first album way better. This one was not even close to what they produced on the last record. To me, the songs mostly all sounded the same, even on the third or fourth listen. Also, I think they pushed the christian thing a little too much and I felt that this alienated their non-religious audience. Also, they did not bring the freshness that was present on their other album. On this one, I feel like it' has been done before, either by themselves or another artist.

On a positive note, I do like the tracks "Again" and "In the Dark". I wish there were more songs with this spontaneity and depth on this record.

The Belton, TX-based heavy rock quintet Flyleaf formed in 2000 when frontwoman Lacey Mosley tried out a string of the dark, hard-edged songs she consistently wrote as a brooding teen on drummer James Culpepper.
