Customer Reviews

Welcome to zen country.

You know when you drive the highway and you have a subtle but overwhelming sense of equanimity and well being? When nothing is missing and you want for nothing? When the country rolls by and through your mind and you just simply feel good? That's Headwater. I caught these guys by chance at Falconetti's east side grill in Vancouver. Only half the band was there and they still managed to gently mesmerize everyone. Masterfully residing on the blue side of bluegrass, My Old Friend is a welcome and poignant addition to the roots/country realm. If your a fan of the genre you needn't hesitate about buying this cd. I bought two after their show and immediately gave one to one of my old friends. This group is the kind of find that you have to share. I haven't heard anything this good since Elliot Brood.

Good For Breakfast

I don't eat much for breakfast with my coffee. Especially outside of Ireland. I don't listen much to country-styled music. But Headwater is an exception to both. Since first hearing My Old Friend, it has become a part of my breakfast routine. The best music to start your day to. It's a folk-country-bluegrass kind of cross-over that evokes both the melancholy I enjoy in music, yet excites that awesome emotion you feel when you are about to go on a first date with a girl you really, really like. Not to mention two harmonious and textured voices, lapsteel, banjo, mandolin and some lovely guitar work (and a solid rhythm, bass, keyboard bedrock.) It avoids over-production, and the songwriting is first-rate. Old Man Lori is my, and many of my friends' favourite song. Headwater are Canadian storytellers and adventurers like the travelling bards of old, and bearers of good news to the music scene with two words: tractor jazz. Praise the Lord!

Serendipitous musical encounter

I bought My Old Friend one random and fortuitous day while on the ferry from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay. Vaguely noticing three guys with instruments sitting in one of the passenger areas, I settled down to read my book and planned to poignantly ignore the musicians should they unfortunately decide to play, which is not an unusual occurance on the ferries. What was unusual though, was that they were good. Really, really good- and in no time the seating area was full of listeners. I bought this CD then and there. I grew up with a mandolin playing father and a deep-rooted love of Blue Grass. I am a huge supporter of anyone from our generation who takes the time and discipline to learn to play an instrument well. Not only do the guys from Headwater know how to play, they are also fantastic song writers and a tight live band. This is one of my most favorite CD's and I share it with everyone who will listen. If this is 'Tractor Jazz' then I am a fan! I'm looking forward to their next CD.
