Classic
Classic songs sung simply with an understanding for their history and intrinsic beauty sometimes transcend the familiar taking the listener to a new place where you’ll find a renewed appreciation for these gems. Denzal Sinclaire is such a singer as he covers standards like Always on My Mind, Stardust, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, and I Can See Clearly Now. Unlike the current crop of plastic crooners there is less pretension here, more soul and an under current of sadness and hope. Denzal’s voice is subtle to the point of beguiling, revealing his true talent only when the listener focuses fully on the purity of his tone and pitch. The instrumentation is kept simple too leaving lots of space. Even trumpets feel soft and moody. This is the prefect chill-out disc. I can see why Diana Krall loves this guy. Try him out and I am sure you will too.
GREAT Album!
Love it! Another reviewer mentioned the difference between Denzal and the crop of 'plastic crooners' out there (that's right, Buble, we're talking about you). Couldn't agree more. Though he's not in the same league (IMHO), he reminds me of a male Stacey Kent. Both understand that we've heard these songs a million times before, and it's the reflection of their personality that comes through in the interpretation of these songs that makes them so listenable. If not, why not listen to the Greats - Frank, Ella, Blossom, Sarah, etc.? Instead, both Denzal and Stacey give us a modern interpretation on these classics. Check out For You for Me for Evermore, Stardust, I Can See Clearly Now, for definite highlights of the disk. Wouldn't say its uniformly strong, but definitely worth your $10. Put it on during dinner with your significant Other - you won't be disappointed. C.
