Album Review

"They say a bad song gets stuck in your head," says the protagonist in "Paranoid Freak," the first single from the Canadian quartet's third release. The band needn't worry, though, since there aren't any substandard tunes among the 13 rocking tracks here, yet they all stick in your head nonetheless. The four-piece has smoothed out its sound somewhat, although it's obvious the bandmembers learned valuable lessons from Jack Douglas, who produced their previous release. These songs connect like the '80s hard rockers — such as Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick, and Aerosmith (all previous Douglas projects) — that inspired them, and even at 13 tracks, there is no filler. The guitars churn up a thick stew somewhat similar to Foreigner in their prime, as lead singer Colin MacDonald does his best to avoid sounding too much like Eddie Vedder channeling Chris Cornell, although sometimes unsuccessfully. A few acoustic-based strummers such as "Will You Wash Away" and even a ballad lighten the attack, but the Trews' strength is in the hooky rock that dominates the set list. Each cut sports a singalong chorus custom-made for the arenas the group hasn't graduated to...yet. MacDonald's throaty voice takes the spotlight, but the real focus is the tunes. They nimbly balance between commercial pop and tougher rock without falling into either camp, and would sound nearly as impressive stripped of electricity. The band's love of Creedence Clearwater Revival, both lyrically and musically, is exposed on the swampy "I Feel the Rain," but just as effective is the Cheap Trick-styled rave-up "Burning Wheels," a nearly perfect sizzler to get your own wheels burning over the speed limit. This juicy '80s concoction is deceptively difficult to pull off, but the Trews make it seem easy. Perhaps rawer production would have provided an additional edge, but tough choruses such as the one on the opening title track instantly stick in your head, and are reminiscent of the glory days of this genre without sounding a bit retro.

Rock is not dead!

While having a conversation with my 15 year old daughter this evening in the car while listening to the manufactured pop-dreck on the radio, I bemoaned the fact that most music today is formulaic and disposable... 20 years from now, no one is going to be listening to Miley Cyrus, Fergie or Rhianna. Like really... Where's the beef? The Trews are the real deal. This disc will restore your faith in the fact that some bands can still crank out some solid rock and roll... music that you'll be listening to today and just as easily 10 years from now. Are you still reading this review? What are you waiting for? Buy this disc already! Every track is a keeper! It's the best $10 I've spent at the iTunes store in a long, long time.

The Trews Reveal New Personality, Old one Still Intact.

The Trews “No Time For Later” re-captures the spirit found in “House of Ill Fame” all while adding some new life to the mix, keeping it fresh. The Trews maritime roots are fully exposed in the fun, rowdy track “I Can’t Stop Laughing”, as well a worthy social commentary “Gun Control” with it’s honest lyrics and flowing riffs add further definition to the groups talent. Tracks like “Hold Me In Your Arms” and “No Time For Later” are sure fire singles, and do not disappoint. The album is also rich with masterpieces like “Man of Two Minds”, “Will You Wash Away”, and “End of The Line” which are reminiscent of classics like “Hopeless” and “You’re So Sober” without the feeling of re-hashing. Some tracks like “Burning Wheels” and “Be Love” sadly do feel slightly re-hashed from more successful implementations of the past. All in all, this album proves The Trews still have time before later.

Top Notch

This is another fantastic album from the trews. I was at first quite skeptical; who can put out three consecutive awesome albums? I mean awesome to the point where EACH AND EVERY song has something to offer....this isn't an album with 5 or 6 good songs. This is a full and complete album, filled with 13 fantastic tunes. In comparison to their previous albums, I would say this is right on par. Neither better nor worse, just more great Trews. What's fantastic about this album is that is has 5 or 6 instant hits; you know, the catchy tunes that you instantly get into. The other ones are just as good, however because they require a few listens for them to grow on you, this album has some pretty solid lasting power. Don't hesitate....get this album immediately. You will not be dissapointed. It's never too late to get into The Trews.
