Album Review
The Great Lake Swimmers' blend of catchy, rural indie pop and brooding north country folk with Low-inspired tempos is like a shot of non-adrenaline. The Toronto outfit's third full-length album, Ongiara, breaks little ground for the Canadian pine-gazers, but somewhere between bandleader Tony Dekker's sonorous tenor and cavernous banjo there is a sweet spot that, when engaged, like on the lovely "Backstage with the Modern Dancers," "Catcher Son," and "I Became Awake," could melt the thin ice of Lake Ontario's shoreline in January. Like fellow sepia-toned Chicago collective the Pinetop Seven, GLS have a gift for melody and atmosphere that is nearly hypnotic, but where the Pinetop gang often shifts the dynamic and runs screaming into the forest, the Swimmers just kind of tread water, resulting in an audio experience that can just as easily infect the listener with drooping eyelids as it can repeated bouts of cathartic Sunday morning contemplation.

Blown Away
This is songwriting at its finest. Touching, melodic, introspective. This album is amazingly consistent and every song is truly a gem. Almost as if I have been waiting a life time to hear something like this.
Tender, Magestic Elegance
One of the most beautiful albums to be released in years. Tony Dekker and company have generated music of unparalleled elegance - from Dekker's pitch-perfect vocals, to Erik Arnesen's phenomenally complementary banjo strumming and Colin Huebert's perfectly placed percussive accents, from Owen Pallett's soaring violin and Bob Egan's awesome pedal-steel flourishes, to Serena Ryder's and Sarah Harmer's wonderful harmony vocals. Dekker's lyrics are equally affecting - heart-rending without being saccharine, they are perfectly set in the serene musical landscape that the Great Lake Swimmers have expertly painted. As layered and beautiful as a Tom Thompson oil painting, it is a fitting testimony to the land referenced in the album title. This is an album that will be cherished for years to come.
Great Songwriting, Great Album
I heard a cut from the new album on CBC Radio last weekend and went to iTunes to purchase the album yesterday. This is the real deal. A beautiful blend of lyrical songwriting, plaintive vocals and a band that has really come together over the years. "Your Rocky Spine" may be the best song written about Canada since Joni Mitchell. There are hints of Blue Rodeo here and there as well as the McGarrigles and Cowboy Junkies, but this is definitely an original, not a derivative, album. I can't wait to see them live at the Church of the Redeemer on April 12th. See you there.
