Self-assured, ambitious, and often ingenious, MGMT’s full-length debut is a densely layered, proudly psychedelic delight. The songs are loaded with alluring hooks and lyrical snippets that grab your attention, making them strong enough to stand up to the bold (mostly synthesized) aural choices made by producer Dave Fridmann (of Flaming Lips fame). On “Time to Pretend,” featured in the movie 21, the bright, grand sounds obscure the bleak, desperate lyrics, as if desperation is worth celebration. (And who’s to say it’s not?) The David Bowie influence is pronounced in spots, from the woozy, vaguely orchestral art-rock of “The Youth” to the ‘70s-style “plastic soul” of “Electric Feel” to the ‘80s-style dance electronics of “Kids.” On the spooky, wobbling, remarkable “The Handshake,” they intone, “We got the handshake under our tongue,” like some sort of cult leaders. Fridmann’s skillful touch, spot-on sequencing, and a distinctive MGMT sparkle help tie together these stylistic adventures. From Satanic-era Stones and T.Rex through Modest Mouse and the Lips, MGMT’s colorful debut is a dazzling trip through 40 years of psychedelic pop — with a deadpan delivery that can only be described as 21st century.

Psychedelic Rock at it's Best!
I've been waiting a long time for this album. And it does not disappoint. Here is a track-by-track review of Oracular Spectacular: Time To Pretend; Easily one of the catchiest tracks of the year if you don't purcase the whole album this is a definate. 5/5 Weekend Wars; You get a Bee Gees-esque sound and it works. Catchy amd great. 4.5/5 The Youth; This sound is haunting and once again that Bee Gees-esque sound and it helps that it is catchy. 4.5/5 Electric Feel; It sounds like it belongs on Saturday Night Fever or something has a disco feel, 4.5/5 Kids; Has a similar under coating as Time To Pretend and like Time To Pretend it is great. 4.5/5 4th Dimesional Transitional; Not a favorite of mine has a great beat but not for me. 3/5 Pieces of What; Simple tune great guitar overall a grower. 4/5 Of Moons, Birds & Monsters; Kinda boring at times but it's okay I guess. 3/5 The Handshake; Like the previous track at times boring but this one stays boring. 2.5/5 Future Reflections; More up-beat a great way to end the album. 4/5 Overall it was a great album. Their are some gems here like Time To Pretend, The Youth, Weekend Wars and Electric Feel. You get the sense of a little bit of Beatles influence with some Bee Gees. You can't go wrong with this album. Can't wait until the next album from these guys. Great Job MGMT!
MGMT:A Space Odyssey
This album could have been written in outskirts of Space. Just look at the album cover and you know you're gonna gonna be entering a strange world when listening to MGMT's Oracular Spectacular. If New Wave hit its peak in the 70s as oppose to the 80's, this is what it would have sounded like. A huge warning to casual listeners though, this album will take awhile to get use to. The album opens up with single "Time To Pretend " which is a huge hit for MGMT but takes a turn in moods with Weekend Wars and The Youth. If you're expecting the Album to sound like carbon copies of Time To Pretend then play it safe by just downloading Electric Feel and Kids. But if you're willing to take a mind trip with MGMT then you'll be rewared with some amazing sounding tracks that could possibly be the soundtrack to a Space Odyssey.
