A better Slean

I wasn't initially interested, because so many of the songs are new performances of previous work. BUT: I saw Ms. Slean in concert before buying her recordings, and found Night Bugs and especially Day One overproduced in places. I chalked it up to her classical training and assumed consequent desire to write elaborate, tasteful arrangements. Orphan Music's revisits are delights, with tighter and sparser arrangements, and her live recordings are faithful to Ms. Slean au naturel. The new pieces are good as well. You could make this your first Sarah Slean aquisition, or your fourth. Delightful either way!

Finally Live Anywhere

Sarah belongs on stage enveloping her audience in herself. If you're a fan and haven't had the priveledge to see her live, run when she plays near you. It's an enchanting experience. If you haven't heard her yet, give yourself a treat and shell out for at least one of her recordings. And may I recommend Orphan Music. From one who has seen her in Toronto at the Harbourfront and in London at The Grand. Her uniqueness stands out from the world of pop culture and provides a relieving glimpse into one of the most creative and talented individuals Canada has ever produced. Mesmerizing.

Outstanding and original twist of some old and new material

I'm especially happy to see this album released, after listening to 5 tracks on sarah's website in anticipation of the album. Some familiar and not so familiar lyrics wrap around new melodies, showcasing very unproduced vocals, I was pleasantly amazed to hear Sarah's voice as one, not overlaid with backgrounds. It's amazing to hear the solo voice, reminding me very much of the originals (they might be the original vocals?!) but just the enunciation, the warble, the clarity of the voice leaves chills well after it's stopped playing on my ipod. I'm very impressed with this album. I truly wish "Me, I'm a thief" had made the cut, and that aside, i'd say this is the best album yet. I like the playfullness it gives - the old records feel without all the pops, the era of "just me, a piano player and an audience" leaves much to be desired in the over-produced era of today.

Biography

Years Active: '00s

Sarah Slean first appeared on the Toronto live circuit in 1997; the release of her independent debut EP Universe followed soon afterward. Already an accomplished, classically trained pianist, the Pickering, Ontario, native pursued her studies in the music program at the University of Toronto while gradually carving out a name for herself as a charismatic, ebullient live performer.
