Album Review
A far cry from the surreal, wiseguy humor of Camper Van Beethoven, Victor Krummenacher's solo debut Out in the Heat is instead a serious and often poignant exploration of life as an openly gay man. Quiet and vaguely rootsy, the album is a showcase for Krummacher's skills as a songwriter — whether adapting the writings of author David Wojnarowicz in "New Mexico" or capturing the life of an aging spinster in "The Antebellum," his songs are nakedly emotional and starkly beautiful.

A founding member of the quintessential '80s-era college radio band Camper Van Beethoven, Victor Krummenacher subsequently played in the CVB offshoot Monks of Doom before beginning a solo career in 1995 with the release of Out in the Heat, recorded with backing band A Great Laugh. The co-founder (with fellow CVB alum Jonathan Segel) of the indie label Magnetic, Krummenacher returned in 1998 with Saint John's Mercy.
