Album Review

After the release of 2005’s barely promoted Libra, Toni Braxton followed Wayne Newton as the headline act at Las Vegas’ Flamingo Hotel and Casino, competed on Dancing with the Stars, and endured a variety of professional and personal setbacks. Braxton’s first album for Atlantic, Pulse was delayed over a year due to leaked material, which prompted the singer to record several new songs. None of the remaining collaborations with big-name artists made the cut, either. Even when low expectations are factored, Pulse is irrefutably satisfying. There’s a high level of conviction that does not waver, and it’s particularly impressive given that the album covers so many stages of a romantic relationship. Few others can pull off such powerful, drastically contrasting material — certainly not in the course of one 40-minute album — like Braxton. She hops from one extreme to the other during the first two songs. “Yesterday” is a bitter breakup ballad in which the teeth-clenched “I don’t love ya/Don’t need ya/Can’t stand ya no more” sounds very real, while “Make My Heart” is a rapturous club track put over the top by some of Braxton’s most athletic vocals. Relatability is no issue since Braxton is able to pull the listener into the songs. A couple ballads are sonically lukewarm and lyrically platitudinal, but even so, this is easily the singer’s best work since The Heat.

A really strong comeback for Toni Braxton

Toni Braxton returns with a strong record that recalls all the elements that made her famous in the 90s.
This is an album of well-crafted adult contemporary pop songs with mostly great production and her signiture sultry voice.
A couple of the weaker productions are obviously catering to a Beyonce-fed crowd and give themselves away as such, but underlying these them are good songs.
I don't know if this album will be welcomed or even recognized by the youth-obsessed media and public, but it certainly deserves a chance to find an audience (of which I consider myself a part of) that is starved for quality songs.

She's Back!!!

Great return from Toni Braxton! Solid album, nice mix of ballads and up tempo tracks. And the voice is BACK!! Looking hot and sounding sweet.

Welcome back Toni ....we missed your voice

I heard the songs in this album and I had to get the whole album right away. I grew up in my teen years in the 1990's and Toni was part of the music I loved back then. So listening to this new fresh great album, makes me wanna think the girl with the beautiful voice has come back...and stronger than ever. I love how much soul she has and how good she sounds vocally. For sure there will be 2 or 3 if not more top 10 hits out if this album,if not a couple of #1 songs. Than you Toni for giving us ,your fans the gift of of your music and voice.

Biography

Born: October 07, 1967 in Severn, MD

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Toni Braxton was one of the most popular and commercially successful female R&B singers of the '90s, thanks to her ability to straddle seemingly opposite worlds. Braxton was soulful enough for R&B audiences, but smooth enough for adult contemporary; sophisticated enough for adults, but sultry enough for younger listeners; strong enough in the face of heartbreak to appeal to women, but ravishing enough to nab the fellas. Wielding such broad appeal, Braxton managed to score not one, but two...
