Customer Reviews
You will only like this album if you have a pulse.
Ok, my prom was in 1976, and I kept hoping Sleigh Bells would show up and add some life. Damn that impossibility paradox of time travel. Crush and You Lost Me are the sleeper hits on this album, Born To Lose may have the best opening guitar riff of...., well, ever and End Of The Line is Rill, Rill revisited (in a good way). Your grandmother will like this album (in a good way). I can't believe my kids din't know this band.
Sleigh Bells is more what happens if your favourite garage band kidnaps the prom queen and holds her in the basement till she cuts a killer vocal.
I agree with Sarah Johnson
"Treats" was so shockingly scrathy, loud, and saturated. It was noise-pop perfection! Their schitck being scratchy distorted guitar, over pulsating drum beats, and a beautiful girly sweet voices singing or sometimes shouting over top of the mess. It had a distinct style, feel, and it was a great debut. This review is solely based on my first listen of "Reign of Terror", but you can't argue with the fact that is is a much softer album. As Sarah Johnson noted in her review it's more "tame". This isn't necesarily a bad thing, it just wasn't what everyone was expecting. Which also isn't necessarily a bad thing. It would be truly sad to find "Reign of Terror" trying to impersonate Sleigh Bells former triumph, instead we have this album riding the coat tails of that album while introducing something new. This album is definitley an easier listen seeing as it doesn't hurt your ears after as much as "Treats". But that's not to say that "Reign" doesn't have the same spark, boom, and power that it's predecessor does, at times. Overall it's hard to top treats. I don't belive that's what Sleigh Bells were trying to do, but despite their intentions they put out another good album, even though it isn't as much of a triumph as their debut. But that's probably more to do with the time than anything else. "Treats" really shook up the music industry because it provided something new, thus making us think more highly of the album. Thus putting that into context, this may actually be a matter over feeling than content. Put into context "Treats" was a better album, but if that context were more removed this album may be able to rise above the long shadow casted down by it's sister.
Wow.
First off, if you liked 'Treats' you're going to like 'Reign of Terror'. It's a great progression for Sleigh Bells--a bit more of a focus on vocals without sacrificing any guitar and the song-writing is still top notch.
Some early standouts for me are End of the Line, Demons and of course the pre-release track Comeback Kids. I'm almost sure that this album will be in my top 5 favorites of 2012.
I think the best I can describe 'Reign of Terror' is: it's like some modern alt/metal kids invented time travel and took over a prom in 1985. And it's every bit as awesome as that sounds!
