Album Review

It's easy to pass off Great Big Sea as a folk-rock band upon first listen. But dig a bit deeper, and you discover that there is more than meets the eye (or more fittingly, the ear) to this Canadian outfit, especially on their 2010 release Safe Upon the Shore. Their ninth full-length studio effort overall continues to touch upon the rootsy style/approach the group is primarily known for, but Great Big Sea is one of the few modern-day bands that also manages to incorporate New Orleans brass ("Don't Wanna Go Home"), sweeping vocal harmonies ("Long Life"), and even Celtic sounds ("Over the Hills") into their trademark style. The end result is a true sound from the heartland, which somehow doesn't come off dated at all — thanks in part to an unmistakably modern production by Los Lobos' Steve Berlin. Also detected throughout are a vibrancy and energy that are simply intoxicating — creating a downright jolly-good feel/party atmosphere, especially on such tracks as "Hit the Ground and Run" and "Wandering Ways." And there are even a few tranquil moments, such as "Yankee Sailor" and "Follow Me Back," as well as a reading of the traditional tune "Gallows Pole" (which rock fans will be familiar with due to Led Zeppelin's version back on Led Zeppelin III). As evidenced throughout Safe Upon the Shore, "roots rock" does not always have to focus around vintage electric guitars and cowboy hats — Great Big Sea has created a pure "heartland sound" all its own.

Great Album

I really enjoy Good People and Road to Ruin. Great Album from a great band!

Only thing better than a Great Big See Album is a Concert

Another wonderful album with the type of music you know you can count on from GBS. If I was to compare this to any other GBS album I would suggest this one is more like Play and far less like The Hard & The Easy. The only minor negative is that the digital audio files and the Digital Booklet do not contain the lyrics. When you consider that every GBS concert I have ever attended always has a section where the audience sings along with the band it would have been appreciated if they had supplied the lyrics.

Great....but....

Great songs, but getting a little too far away from their sound. We need more great big anthems like "Run Runaway", "Ordinary Day", and "Sea of No Cares". There are still some very nice songs on here though..."Long Life", and "Road To Ruin" being my favourites. Despite many "safe" songs, we need more energy boys...time to bring back the Great big in Great Big Sea.

The sea shanty tradition of Newfoundland is fused with the spirit and energy of contemporary rock and popular music by Great Big Sea. Their hard-driving approach has not only made them popular in their homeland, where they've been nominated for four Juno Awards, but has brought them a growing recognition throughout North America and Europe. The inspiration for Great Big Sea was sparked during informal, kitchen-party jam sessions in the Newfoundland fishing village of Petty Harbor. Guitar, mandolin,...
