Dub inspired Clash tracks for a good cause!
December 2009 will mark thirty years since the release of the landmark album, London Calling by The Clash and one week later marks seven years since the untimely passing of lead singer and guitarist Joe Strummer. To celebrate this anniversary and in the spirit of Strummer’s connection with Jamaican music via reggae and dub comes the album Shatter The Hotel: A Dub Inspired Tribute To Joe Strummer (rewired & dubbed out tracks from the Strummer/Jones catalogue). This is a project that brings Canadian artists together with artists from England, Scotland and the USA. The tracks run from straight-up roots dub (Creation Rockers, Wrongtom) to contemporary reggae sounds (DubCats, John Brown's Body) to dubbed out punk (Chomsky Allstars) and dub-house styles (Citizen Sound, Nate Wize). Proceeds from the sale of this release will benefit Strummerville: The Joe Strummer Foundation For New Music, a registered charity that aims to create new opportunities for aspiring musicians. Set up by the friends and family of Joe Strummer in the year after his death, the charity seeks to reflect Joe's unique contribution to the music world by offering support, resources and performance opportunities to artists who would not normally have access to them.
Dubtastic!
Ok this is awesome stuff!! These tracks play homage to the late and great Joe Strummer. I can safely say that I can listen to this from start to finish without even thinking of skipping a single track. Some of the tracks are straight ahead in a roots style and some are more dubwise. Rock The Casbah sounds totally unlike the original although it does not offend in the process... John Brown's Body do a wicked version of Bankrobber and are definetly a band worth investigating. Highly recomend and the cash goes to a good cause!
