iTunes Review
Kelowna, British Columbia’s Ladyhawk specialize in dark, angry, soul-baring tunes that climax in cathartic vocal wails, warm overdriven guitar burns and brutal drum shots. Their tough, unadorned sound uses the live-to-tape immediacy most often found on Steve Albini productions. However, this BC quartet never ventured to Chicago for such an adventure, but rather gave it their best hometown push in an abandoned farmhouse behind a mall for their second full length album, 2008’s Shots (a tribute to the band’s ambitious drinking schedule). This naturalist approach makes for a ‘warts-n-all’ display of cranky amp distortion (“Night You’re Beautiful”), stoner/riff rock dissonance and the occasional quiet moment where the vocals shake in their cold, vulnerable nakedness. “(I’ll Be Your) Ashtray” is them being sensitive. The ten-minute slow brood of the album’s closer, “Ghost Blues,” builds to a witch-trial fire-pit chant that’s brilliantly effective and chilling.
Customer Reviews
Dope
This album is tidy and tight, and I'm not even sure what those words mean as adjectives, I just know they're positive and this album is great. I get this record. Like the gentleman of Ladyhawk I live in Vancouver and was raised in the rugged interior of British Columbia. I don't know if that makes me privy to a greater understanding of the record or by making that statement I'm a douchebag, either way - drinking, girls and rock? I get it. And it's good.
Kick-Add Canarock
Wow. Kelowna has more to it than old farts sipping vino. I'm stunned. These guys seriously kick it. I'm proud to be Canadian again. Screw the lethargic Matthew Good.
solid
This album is a great step forward for the Hawk. Whereas their self-titled debut was straight ahead rock, Shots expands on the fist pumping anthemics with greater depth and musicianship. Faces of Death is a classic. Ghost Blues just brings it. I recommend checking out the version of You Ran from the EP because it is just two minutes of sweet utter psyche but the one here is solid too. Highly recommended.
