Album Review

Perennial surfer dude/singer/songwriter Jack Johnson lends his voice to the eternally silent Curious George on this collection of "Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies," original material built around the famous monkey and his strange obsession with "the Man with the Yellow Hat." Universal Pictures couldn't have picked a better collaborator for this soundtrack to the Curious George film, as Johnson's easygoing delivery and breezy demeanor match George's silent curiosity to a T. Fellow songwriters Ben Harper, G. Love, and Matt Costa contribute three songs to the predominantly children-oriented affair, while Johnson and band give up an island rendition of the White Stripes' "We're Going to Be Friends," as well as the umpteenth cover of Schoolhouse Rock!'s "Three Is the Magic Number." Heady stuff? Not exactly, but there's not an ounce of pretense to the project, making it a fun, safe bet for kids and a forgettable — yet not entirely unpleasant — piece of escapism for adults. [Universal Island's 2006 edition featured alternate album art and one bonus track.]

Just Chill And Enjoy

I don't know what is up with these other reviewers, the album is the same awesome Jack as always, doing a Soundtrack/Childrens/Sing-Along album. It makes no sense to be outraged . I don't think it's as great as Brushfire Fairytales or In Between Dreams, but thats clearly because the album is geared towards children, or more specifically, children and their parents. Like most Jack albums though, it gets better with age. A great sing-along booklet is included in the album, which can be printed from Adobe Acrobat. The songs definitely are more fun once you learn the lyrics a bit. Just realize that song writing is what makes Jack great, and he is doing what a lot of great artists do, experimenting in a different genre. I don't have any children, but so far I like it anyway. You should make up your own mind.

Jack Rules!

Anything Jack Johnson touches is golden. You know what to expect from his albums and it's great to hear collabs with other artists

Solid, Intelligent Music For All Ages

Terrific stuff! People often dismiss children's music as simplistic. The fact is that most music made for kid's IS lame because it aims down (are you listening Barney?). Jack takes this music seriously and crafts expressive, playful tunes for all ages on this album; taking his inspiration directly from the original children's books we all love and bringing this unique sensibilities to the music. The fact that it's attached to a movie is irrelevant. The reviewer who says this is "selling out" is revealing more about his own arrogance and lack of awareness than anything else. Did he even bother to listen to it? Doubtful. If this is selling out then I'm sold, baby!

Biography

Born: May 18, 1975 in Hawaii

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Before Jack Johnson became the 21st century kingpin of beachside pop/rock, he was a champion surfer on the professional route. The sport was second nature to the Hawaiian native, who began chasing waves as a toddler and, by the age of 17, had become an outstanding athlete on the Banzai Pipeline. However, Johnson was also testing other creative outlets — specifically film and music — and a serious surfing accident during his first professional competition convinced him to devote more time...
